Buy the Book:

I first stumbled across The Other Guy by Cary Attwell as I was commenting on posts for the WWW Wednesday Meme it sounded like an interesting read so I bought it. I liked the premise of this book as it deals with what happens to guy who gets left at the alter rather than following the girl whose ex swept her off her feet again. In this book rather than the girl taking off on the honeymoon it is the former groom, Emory, as he decides to spend a week trying to reinvent himself before returning to reality. While there he meets Nate and learns things about himself that he hadn’t realized before.

I really enjoyed Emory’s journey towards self discovery as he realized that maybe there was a big part of himself that he had been denying his entire life. That maybe the reason things never seemed to work out with women might be because he really isn’t into women, at least not entirely. I loved Nate and Emory together and found their relationship to be believable in all that happened. I loved Emory’s doubts and angst…well, there were times when the angst came across as very teenagery but it wasn’t over done so I was able to live with it. My heart ached when Emory made some mistakes and it got all heart-achy (the good kind) during all those squishy happy romantic times.

But The Other Guy wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Emory (and sometimes even Nate) seemed to delight in using $3 words whenever they got a chance. Now, I count myself as pretty word smithy and I recognize a lot of words that regular people (ie non-bibliophiles) don’t but there where several times where I was really glad for the built in dictionary on my ereader for looking things up. I also felt that there was something missing in this story. It often just seemed to skim the surface on some emotions and I felt it could have used a little more depth. I would have also liked to see more interaction from some of the secondary characters as they can really flesh out a story.

Throughout my read of The Other Guy I was also reminder of old school dime store romance novels as sex was only something that was alluded too. Now I don’t need sex in a story to move it along but I think that this book might have been a little better with a sex scene or two. Perhaps the lack of a sex scene is part of the something that was missing from this story. Overall, though The Other Guy was a quick read and I whipped through it in just a few hours. The characters were likable and I enjoyed the freshness of a M-M romance. Though I would be curious to see what a gay man might think of the book as they have a little more insight than I do on the struggles with coming to terms with their sexuality in a world that isn’t always very forgiving. The Other Guy is a decent read and I’ll be curious to see what Atwells comes out with next.

Posted by Irish in Month in Review, Top 12 List0 Comments

Hello Internet!

By now you know the drill with this post. I list out the top books that I read and loved this past month and from them I choose the best of the best. This book then gets listed in my Top 12 List (check out my sidebar) and at the end of the year those 12 books are pitted against each other and my top book for the year is chosen.

The Contenders – 5 Star Reads
Sadly there were no 5 star reads for me this month so my Top book will be chosen from my 4 star reads. Which then makes things pretty easy so my Top Pick for December 2012 is:

Third Grave Dead Ahead with is the third book in the Charlie Davidson series by Daynda Jones. This is also my favorite book in the series so far as well. I just love this world and all of these characters.

This month’s top pick has been the easiest one in a long time…but that is only because there was only one book that I loved enough to give a 5 star rating. I loved this book so much that after I finished the audio I went and read the whole story over again in print. If you haven’t tried this series yet they you are really missing out!

Top 12 List: October 2012 / Month in Review

Hello Internet!

By now you know the drill with this post. I list out the top books that I read and loved this past month and from them I choose the best of the best. This book then gets listed in my Top 12 List (check out my sidebar) and at the end of the year those 12 books are pitted against each other and my top book for the year is chosen.

The Contenders – 5 Star Reads
The Dead and Buried by Kim Harrington (review to come in January 2013)
Easy by Tamarra Webber
One Good Earl Deserves Lover (Rule of Scoundrels, Book 2) by Sarah MacLean (review to come in January 2013)
The Opposite of Hallelujah by Anna Jarzab
This is such a hard choice this month since I love all of these books so very much! I think to help try and make this one a little easier for me I’m going to knock out the two that aren’t out until 2013. I know I know I’m being hash and mean but I need to narrow this down somehow! I read all of these pretty much in a single sitting so you know they are all amazing reads and you should have them all on your list if they aren’t already. The book that I do chose to be the best of the best this month though goes to the one with the Polish boy and that is Anna Jarzab’s The Opposite of Hallelujah.
