Fist Line(s): A cool April drizzle pricks my face as I stand in the poorly lit parking lot of the Fremont Pharmacy with my roll-away suitcase.

When I first started A Little Too Hot by Lisa Desrochers I wasn’t so sure about it. The beginning plot was just blah and I didn’t really connect with Sam or care much for the hero of the story. But then came the twist which had me sitting up and paying attention. Things went from slow to hyperactive and I was just taken along for the resulting roller coaster ride. Over the course of the book I grew to like Sam and Harrison more and thought that their relationship progression was real and heart achy. Even if Harrison tended to blow a little too hot and cold for my tastes as I did understand his reasons for doing so.

While I haven’t read the other books in the A Little Too Far series I have a feeling that this one is set apart from the first two installments. A Little Too Hot differs from many New Adult titles in that it was more of a romantic suspense story than just a straight romance. Think Julie Garwood and her Buchanan-Renard series and you have an idea of what this particular book is like. There were times in A Little Too Hot where I was rolling my eyes at various events and I thought the thing that Sam was the key to was flimsy at best it didn’t really take away from my enjoyment of the story.

The flaws for me in this one was that the beginning was a bit slow, followed by some fast paced action, to another slow period and then the ultimate climax of the story. All with wee bits and pieces to the story that seemed to elude all the characters but I saw coming from a mile off. If you read enough mystery and suspense novels it can be hard for authors to toss the red herrings and such though I do feel that Desrochers has a lot of promise in this genre. While Desrochers wasn’t able to fool me I did like how she handled the story and if she wrote another romantic suspense novel I think that I would read it in a heart beat.

A Little Too Hot was a fun story and even though its part of a series it can totally stand on its own. Characters from the previous installments do make a cameo but their roles are small and are just a way to flesh out Sam’s world outside of the events that are going on in A Little Too Hot. Their parts are so small though that if you aren’t familiar with the other books, or at very least haven’t read the synopses of them, then you may not even realize that they had books of their own. A Little Too Hot works as a stand alone and I fear that when I go back to read the first two installments of the series that I may end up a bit disappointed in them as I’ll be wanting this crazy suspense story and will only get a contemporary romance. As such I will probably hold off a bit on reading them until I can get a few pallet cleansers under my belt.
