First Line(s): “Why do we have to go to daddy’s house?” Maddie asks from the back seat of my SUV, her small arms crossed over her chest, holding her dolly tightly against her and her face scrunched in a scowl.

I totally blitzed through the first four books in Kristen Proby’s With Me in Seattle series back in April and just fell in love with Montgomery family. Throughout the later couple of books there began this backstory of Caleb Montgomery and Brynna Vincent and I was really curious to read their story. I wanted to know what Brynna was running from and just wanted to see the sparks fly between the two. Safe with Me by Kristen Proby is Caleb and Brynna’s story and sadly it didn’t really live up to my expectations.

It started with a prologue that explains Brynna’s mad dash from Chicago to Seattle and it just left me with a serious case of eye roll. It lacked the suspense that it was supposed to give and everything that came after when dealing with that plot point just felt so flat and forced. As a result this story just didn’t hold the same draw for me that the others in the series did. I think that I would have preferred this one more if it wasn’t for the suspense aspect of it.

Overall, I did like the relationship of Caleb and Brynna although I really could have done without the cliche breakup and then getting back together. Especially when the whole split was over nothing, just Caleb deciding unilaterally that he wasn’t good enough for Brynna so without talking to her or his family he’s just going to pack up and leave. Como say what now? *le sigh*

The thing that saved this story for me was the appearance of all the other Montgomery’s. If it wasn’t for them I’m not sure if I would have made it to the end. The draw of Caleb and Brynna just wasn’t enough for me nor was the suspense storyline. Hopefully the next story will just focus on the couple with fun little tid bits with the rest of the clan.
