Book 3: Wrecked (30 April 2013)

I first heard of Alyssa Rose Ivy when I signed up for a blog tour for her upcoming book, Wrecked. When I learned that it was the third book in a series I thought it might be a good idea to read the other books so I could become more familiar with the world and characters that Ivy had created. Though Derailed is the first in a series each book is more of a companion novel as each one involves different characters as the main story ARC but they are all connected.

Derailed is the story of Molly and her high school sweet heart Ben. Molly has returned to her home town as she recovers from a personal tragedy. While there she reconnects with friends and who she was before she left town. Molly has some personal demons to face both in her present and her past and I liked her personal journey over the course of the book. I liked her scenes with Ben and found their story to be realistic. I liked the secondary characters but felt that some of them felt a little flat on one dimensional.

The story was a quick read and I for the most part I enjoyed it. There were some choices that characters made that I didn’t like and a couple things that didn’t make sense and the ending was a bit rushed…but overall this was a good story. I enjoyed the world that Ivy created and I look forward to reading other books in this series.

Derailed is also a book that falls into that New Adult category and its one that isn’t all about sex. Lately it seems as if New Adult gets knocked down as so many books want to be the next 50 Shades for the 20-something set. But not all stories in this in between category are like that and Derailed is one that stands out. Yes, there is sex in it but the story is more about Molly’s journey of self discovery. Its a book that I think any who like contemporary romance, both adult and YA, will enjoy.

I’m glad there’s more than sex to this NA. My main problem with this genre is the plot just isn’t always fleshed out as well. Hopefully more authors will continue to write it though because the good ones are just that, good.

I’ll be giving this one a go. Am I one of the few people that did not enjoy 50 shades? Regardless this book sounds good, purely based on the fact that sex is not at the fore-front of the plot.
