WWW Wednesday: 09 January 2013 (Find out what I'm reading this week)

WWW Wednesdays is hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading asks you to answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

My answers:

What are you currently reading?

The Rook by Daniel O'Malley (GoodReads, Audio). So much info dumping going on and it takes away from what is going on in the story. I get that the MC has lost her memory and is learning things as we do but there has got to be a better way to go about it than all this info dumping.

Venom by Fiona Paul (GoodReads). Started this one after finishing the book of never ended crazy. A little slow to get into but that could be because its such a radical change from the book that I just finished. Hoping that the pace picks up soon.

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken (GoodReads). Grabbed the wrong book when I went into work on Monday and so ended up starting this one on my lunch break. It wasn't long before I was hooked and now I need more time so that I can finish it.

What did you recently finish reading?

Victoria Rebels by Carolyn Meyer (GoodReads, 3 stars). I wanted to like this one  more than I did. For me it didn't offer up any real insight into Queen Victoria's early years that I didn't already know. Check out my full review here

Taking Chances by Molly McAdams (GoodReads, 1 Star). This is one seriously crazy book of WTF just happened. Check out my review here.

Blaze by Laurie Boyle Crompton (GoodReads, 3.5 Stars). This was a quick read and not a terrible one either. I liked how it had a pretty girl who was smart and a huge geek who made a mistake and was strong enough to deal with consequences.

What did I post about last week?
What do you think you'll read next?

I'll probably read something from my List of Twelve.
  1. Classic/Middle Grade^Ash Mistry and the Savage Palace by Sarwat Chadda
  2. New Release*: A Million Suns by Beth Revis
  3. Series: If We Kiss & Kiss Me Again by Rachel Vail - ok I know this is two books but they are both short so they can almost count as one.
  4. Backlist**: The Vampire Stalker by Allison VanDiepen
  5. Review Book: Venom by Fiona Paul
I also have some books from the library, to read for a blog tour, or to prepare for an upcoming book signing to read. Plus all those shiny new books that always seem to catch my eye and distract me. If I ever finish the list of twelve above then I'll try to work any of these books that remain into the new list. Needless to say though I'm going to be pretty busy over the next couple of months.

  1. Great books this week. I loved The Darkest Minds, just finished it myself a couple days ago and it was addictive, can't wait for book 2 (shame it's 12 months away) :( I just bought Taking Chances, thought I heard some good things, sorry you didn't enjoy it. Blaze looks interesting, will have to check it out. Thanks for sharing.

    1. If you haven't read Bracken's debut, Brightly Woven, then it might be a good book to read while you wait for DM 2. =)

As for Taking Chances there are a lot of people on GoodReads the seem to love it. It just wasn't for me. Though it was such a train wreck I did read it cover to cover as opposed to so bad its a DNF so there is that.

I liked Blaze. It wasn't anything amazing but it was good.

  3. The Rook sounds like it will be a read not a listen for me. Too much info and I can't follow! You have some fun books this week, I need to look into them!

    1. For me I think that audio was a good choice as I'm not sure I'd have the patience to read all the info that gets dumped during this read. I'd probably end up starting to skip chapters and then end up missing something important.

  4. I've been looking for more reads with geeks starring in them. I'll definitely be checking Blaze out. :]

  5. I'm disappointed that you aren't enjoying The Rook. I think I'm still going to give it a try at some point, and I hope I enjoy it more than you have been!

    1. I am enjoying the Rook...its just when they take a whole chapter or two to explain the history of a thing that I am taken out of the story and get bored with it. History and background have its place and is needed in a supernatural world...but to just dump it all at once is just lazy story telling.

  6. I'm afraid I'd skim if I read The Rook. But it does sound good.

  9. I'm not familiar with any of these, but there's definitely a few I'm going to look into . . . particularly The Darkest Minds. That one definitely looks like the kind of book I could fall into!

  10. I don't know how you can get into books via audio. The voices sound just all wrong for me and it's just not fast enough xD Been seeing some mixed reviews for Darkest Mind, let's see if it keeps up being good for you.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and Happy Reading!

    1. It all depends on the narrator for me. I've had to DNF audios where the narrator has sucked...and with some other books it was because it was an audio that I managed to finish (and usually love) it. So maybe you just haven't found the right narrator yet. But I do agree that it can be too slow sometimes though its nice to be forced to slow down every so often and really enjoy the language of the words.

  11. Most of these aren't my thing but I'm thinking about Blaze. I just love that cover! Sorry you didn't enjoy Taking Chances.

Thanks for stopping by my Wednesday post.
