One thing that I love about sequels is that since the characters are already established you can get right down into the story and Kim Harrington does this nicely. While also managing to refresh information just enough to remind readers of what came before. All the usual suspects from book 1 made it back, with the notable exception of Madam Maslov. I really missed her needling of Clare’s mom and hope that if there is a next book that she makes a return.
The mystery in this one was a bit less complex than in Clarity and while it was still entertaining I was able to figure things out fully before the big reveal. But the mystery is only a small part of Perception, this book is more about the after effects of a dramatic event and the relationships in Clare’s life. While the first book in the series focused a lot on the mystery I felt that this one was more about Clare’s family and how she grew a bit closer to them. Its also about Clare learning to trust and allow other people in her life.
I think that fans of Clarity will be pretty pleased with this novel. The mystery is engaging but as I said above its all the various relationship dynamics that really make this a quality read. Those who were torn between Clare’s romantic choices will be satisfied with how things end in this book as well. No matter what team that they fall on as Kim Harrington does a great job in showing both the best (and worst) qualities of both boys. And as always, the scenes with Clare and her mother and brother really add some hilarity to the novel. Perception is a fast paced read and makes me long for more stories from Eastport, MA…so if you love a good snark filled mystery dash out right now and pick this one up!
