Dear Readers...If you don't have a book bully in your life then you need to get one....or two...because without them you might miss out on some really great and amazing reads. I have two main book bullies and so far I have fallen head over heels in love with 99% of the books that they have forced me to read. One of these books that I was bullied to read was A Little Wanting Song by Cath Crowley. Book Bully #2 was raving and raving about it on twitter with another girl in my twitter stream and my interest was peaked. Then when I'd mentioned I hadn't read it (or heard of the book at that point) she and the girl who she was chatting with in essence forced me to buy the ebook that very night for Alis the nook.

Only I never quite got around to reading this one on my nook. Instead I made the mistake of looking at the start of A Little Wanting Song via the nook app on my itouch and then didn't stop reading until I was done. That's right, I read this entire book on the wee screen of my itouch because I didn't even want to stop for the 2 minutes it would have taken to cross the room and grab my nook. That is how good and absorbing this story is.

A Little Wanting Song is told from two points of view, Charlie and Rose, two girls who have known each other their entire lives but have never really connected until the summer after Charlie's Gran dies. Charlie is a holiday visitor to the town where Rose considers herself to be stuck. Its not until Rose gets a scholarship to a school in the city where Charlie is from that Rose thinks that Charlie might not be so bad after all. Rose is also just the sort of outgoing girl that Charlie needs to help bring her out of her shell and to help her move on from her grief.

This book was fast paced and so engrossing. I loved all of the characters - especially Dave and yes even Luke who could be a bit of an ass at times. I loved all the musical references and the beautiful way common everyday words were used to tell this story. I blitzed through this in a single sitting and am eagerly looking forward to reading more books by Cath Crowley. With just one book she's made it onto my must read list and if you haven't read something by her yet then you are definitely going to want to change that.

Siren Series Order
Book 1: Personal Demons
Book 2: Original Sin
Book 3: Last Rite (May 2012)

I've heard a lot of Personal Demons from my various blogger friends and so was eager to check this one out. Sadly, my reading eyes are far bigger than my available reading time so when I was able to get this one to review via audio I was overjoyed. I love listening to audios on my commute to work as it makes that time seem more useful especially when I get stuck in traffic.

Personal Demons as a whole was a bit of a hit or miss story for me. I loved the big story arc mystery of just what it is that makes Franny so in demand of both heaven and hell and I enjoyed the interactions she had with Gabrial and Luc. Although as with many other books I wasn't really feeling the love triangle or that Franny seemed to be equally in love with both boys. She always seemed to be lusting over the one she was with and never really seemed to make a conscience choice about what she liked or didn't like about each boy.

I liked how Franny had parents and a large family however they were really under utilized...almost to the point where they really weren't a part of the story. The same went for Franny's two best friends as well. They were present a lot at the start of the book but then they were dropped along the way and it became all about Franny and the boy of the moment. Franny herself also really got on my nerves. She was just a bit too teenage girl for me. Yes, I know that she's SUPPOSED to be a teenage girl...so in that aspect Lisa Desrochers does a fabulous job. I just wish that she had more visible depth and was less teen girl in lust and only thinks about boys.

Despite all that though I am still curious to see where this story is going. The main story line of this book was wrapped up but there are still enough open threads to leave the reader wanting to know more. To that end, I already have book 2 sitting on my reading pile waiting for some time to get to it. I hope that as the serious progresses that Franny will mature more and that with luck there will be more scenes with Luc to make up for any annoyances that Franny brings.

About the narrators:
I loved loved loved Michael Nathanson as the voice of Luc. ZOMG that voice was very demonic at all the right times and just sends chills down your spine when it does. Nathanson was very believable as a millenia old demon and he even managed to handle the female voices well. Franny was just as annoying when he read her as when Sara Barnett voiced her. Speaking of Sara Barnett she did a very good job narrating the voice of Franny. Her male characterizations could have been better but overall I didn't mind listening to her. Barnett may not be my first choice when it comes to future audios but I think that will all depend on the book involved.

What I Watched - Week of 25 Sept 2011

*Graphic shamelessly stolen from galleysmith.com for this post ;-)
I've seen a few blogs putting up a weekly post on what they watch during the week and I thought why not join in as I do enjoy reading those posts (most notably from Galleysmith and Pop Culture Junkie). This will include the shows and movies that I watch over the week and will be my commentary on them. Be warned as unlike with my book reviews spoilers will abound. As this is premiere week there will probably be a lot of shows watched. I'll often DVR most things and then watch as time permits....and while I still watch too much tv...I am trying to cut back. Really...I am.
Shows  watched - scroll down to see my thoughts on each episode

Doctor Who - The God Complex (6x11)
How I Met Your Mother - The Best Man (7x01) &  The Naked Truth (7x02)
Two and a Half Men - Nice to Meet You, Walden Schmidt (9x01)
2 Broke Girls - Pilot (1x01)
Castle - Rise
Lost Girl - I Fought the Fae (and the Fae Won) (2x02) & Scream a Little Dream (2x03)
Glee - Purple Piano Project (3x01)
Body of Proof -  Love Thy Neighbor (2x01)
Parenthood - Hey, if You're Not Using That Baby... (3x02)
New Girl - Pilot (1x01)
Grey's Anatomy - Free Falling (8x01) & She's Gone (8x02)
The Big Bang Theory - The Skank Reflex Analysis (5x01) and The Infestation Hypothesis (5x02)
Doctor Who - Closing Time (6x12)

Monday

Doctor Who - The God Complex (6x11) - This episode started off like it would be one of the potentially scary but really funny ones that get tossed in every so often. And it did start off funny...but then it turned really sad and supposedly sees the end of Amy and Rory as companions. I know that Amy and Rory are downgrading their roles and part of me if over them as companions....but I still hate to see them go. Although the first episode of the season began with them not having seen the Doctor in a few months and settling into their new house...and this one sees them just moving in. So, there is something wonky going on with the time line. I really try not to over think this show too much though as Moffat is an evil genius and I am only right about 50% of the time. I can't wait for next week and we get to see the return of Craig...I loved him in The Lodger.

How I Met Your Mother - The Best Man (7x01)& The Naked Truth (7x02) - New season starts with a double header. woo! I really like this show and was happy to see it return. Hopefully this season we'll start to get more solid answers on who the mother is. I was a bit disappointed in the fact that they didn't show who Barney was marrying. I really hope that they don't drag that out until the end of the season and I'm not sure how I feel about the return of Victoria. Do we really need to start recycling ex-girlfriends? Just get to the mother already!

Two and a Half Men - Nice to Meet You, Walden Schmidt (9x01) - I'm a bit ashamed that I watched this one as I've never liked the show...and even without Charlie Sheen I still didn't like the show. Just so blah and unfunny. Ashton's character is very like his one on That 70s Show. And Kelso was super annoying. Definitely will be going back to avoiding this show.

2 Broke Girls - Pilot (1x01) - I suffered through this show in order to give 2 Broke Girls a shot. Boy was that a waste of my time. I felt that it was trying too hard to be funny and dropped one liners left and right...and they just fell flat. This won't be a show I'll be picking up. Which leaves an hour and a half that I'll have to kill between How I Met Your Mother and Castle. Monday's will probably turn into a tv off day and catch up with the DVR later.

Castle - Rise - I've been waiting for this episode all summer long! I was so glad that it picked up right where last season ended. But I was horribly disappointed that Kate didn't remember that Castle told her that he loved her....then told him that she needed space and she'd call him. Grr!!! Kate really broke my heart in this episode she just seemed so broken. I really hope that she gets her grove back soon and returns to her feisty ways. I am also intrigued at the apparent new mystery ARC. So far the start of the season seems to have this underlying dark and sinister tone than previous ones have had. I also don't like how Alexis is more the stereotypical moody teenager - I like her in that bright, sunny, snarky and fun daughter who admires the crazy things her dad does. Not the one who resents him for trying to protect the woman he loves. And ZOMG that ending...with Kate admitting to remembering everything. O_O I wonder what this means for her and Castle as she was about to admit to him not too long ago that she was into him. Oh you Castle writers how you tease! Just get them together already!!

Tuesday

Lost Girl - I Fought the Fae (and the Fae Won) (2x02) & Scream a Little Dream (2x03) - Words can't say how much I love this show and just how freaking amazing Kenzi and Hale are. This episode brought on the potential of a new Ash. Which I am ok with as I really didn't like the old one - not that he got much screen time but something about the actor bothered me. This new guy I look forward to seeing more of him and seeing what sort of intrigue that he will bring to the show. I also liked The Blackthorne and really hope to see more of him....I especially loved his scenes with Trick. I wonder what will happen between Dyson and Bo - even though he gave up his love for her I somehow don't think that its over just yet. I am not sure if I want them together or not but I'm a bit tired of her proclaiming her love for Dyson and then flirting with Lauren and leading her on. Just make a choice already! Now there is a character that I want to know more backstory on. I also want a brownie! Why oh why can't those creatures be real?

Glee - Purple Piano Project (3x01) - After last season I was unsure if I wanted to pick this one back up again and with the start of season 3. I love Kurt and Blaine together...although they are a bit sickningly sweet but Sue is even more annoying than ever and Quinn seems to have gone off the deep end. My attention really drifted in this episode so not sure if I really caught what was going on...although I don't think that this one had much in the way of plot. Over all I'm just meh on this one. I'll give it a few more episodes but there is a good chance this on will be dropped from my tv schedule.

Body of Proof - Love Thy Neighbor (2x01) - I really enjoy this show. I love how Meghan interacts with everyone, especially with her daughter. I also like the added tension that's been going on with her boss ever since she started to date Meghan's ex. The mystery of this one I thought was a bit out there and I think that the cops jumped to meth too quickly once they figured out there was some chemical in the air. But overall a very good mystery.

Wednesday

Parenthood - Hey, if You're Not Using That Baby... (3x02) - I am fast losing interest in this show. First off the season started with a time jump and I hate those and then Haddie was even more annoying than usual.  She puts on this good girl act but she's really just a big ol' b&*# and I'm just tired of her. I also don't like how the focus on the show seems to be more on Adam and Kristina than on the rest of the family. Though in this episode we saw more of Sarah and Mr Cyr...but as with the last time he was on screen she leads him on and then rips his heart out. Ok...those last few moments of the show when she changes her mind...awe inducing...I just love how happy Mark Cyr looked when Sarah said she was in. This episode also had Max going back to public school and the scenes with him in class just seemed so pointless to me why not use that time to show something with Drew - that character is so overlooked that I often forget he's part of the cast. I'll try a few more episodes but I'm not sure if I'll keep up with it or maybe I'll just fast forward through all the annoying Haddie and Max scenes.

New Girl - Pilot (1x01) - I had high hopes for this one but I felt that it just fell a bit flat. I found Zoe's character to be a bit too socially awkward and more annoying than funny. Same with her new roommates.

Thursday

Grey's Anatomy - Free Falling (8x01) & She's Gone (8x02) - OK...first off I've got to say that Cristina's meltdown in the stairwell was a little weird. Maybe that's just because I'm not used to seeing her get all emotional. I am also so tired of Meredith pulling all sorts of crap and then getting away with it. How many times must the chief put his neck out to save her ass before she'll learn? But since she never faces any consequences and as a result she keeps pulling crap. I was so glad when at least the social services lady pulled the baby away from her. Though I am sad for that baby and Derek and for a family getting torn apart. Meredith is such an unlikable character these days and I am so tired of her.

Friday

The Big Bang Theory - The Skank Reflex Analysis (5x01) and The Infestation Hypothesis (5x02) - Amy Farrah Fowler is not funny. I find her character to be annoying and just a tad bit creepy. I miss the friendship dynamic between Penny and Bernadette (which was far more believable) since Amy was introduced. I didn't laugh once in the first episode of the 2 episode premier and the only times I laughed on the 2nd one was when Amy wasn't around. I was actually hoping that it would be an Amy free one and loved how Penny and Sheldon seemed to be getting screen time again. I am also not a fan of Leonard and Priya and was hoping with her moving back to India that they'd fizzle and die. I did like the bits with the chair though and hope that the next episode picks up with Raj and Holowitz bringing in the contaminated chair into Sheldon and Leonard's apartment...that could be some good times.

Saturday

Doctor Who - Closing Time (6x12) - Mush. My brain is going to turn to mush from watching this show. I adore how things are coming full circle from the start of the season and really wish that it was already time for next weeks episode. I loved the return of Craig from The Lodger and had many laugh out loud moments. Stormageddon! lol It crushed me though when I saw the stationary and then how the Doctor got the stetson...I love how they showed these little details from the first episode of the season...but its crushing knowing what is to come. I also like the wee bit of added details on River Song's bio and that creepy little rhyme. I also wonder if maybe the doctor that is referenced in it could be River and not the Doctor...since River does hold the title of doctor. Argh! I don't know...so many theories and so little clue as to what might actually be true!

Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

Publisher: Dutton Juvenile
Source: Borrowed
Publication Date: 29 September 2011
Series or Standalone: Standalone
Note: Companion novel to Anna and the French Kiss and Ilsa and the Happily Ever After (2012)
ISBN: 0525423281
Format: Paperback (ARC)
Pages: 338

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

First Line: I have three simple wishes.

From the moment that I finished Anna and the French Kiss I've been looking forward to reading the companion book Lola and the Boy Next Door.  The moment I received the book from a friend I started to read it and got lost in the new world that Stephanie Perkins created. I fell in love with Cricket....the uber sweet boy next door. Lola on the other hand as a bit of a hit or miss character for me. I wanted so much to love her as much as I did Anna but that never happened. I did love her quirkiness and sense of style. I loved her confidence in herself and how she didn't care what others thought of her outfits. I also loved her dads. I loved how they were a very active part of her life.

I didn't love how Lola seemed to use the people around her, especially Cricket. And I didn't like how her story as a bit of  Anna and the French Kiss in reverse. I loved the cameos of Anna and Etienne in the book but I feel that Etienne was in the story a bit too much. I think I would have liked things more if it was Anna who had the bigger role rather than Etienne. Though I still enjoyed Anna and Etienne's relationship. Even though at times Etienne seemed to be around Anna a bit too much. Though that is more of my need for some personal space rather than any sort of unrealistic aspect of two teens in love.

In the end while I really liked this book I didn't love it as much as I did with Anna there was just something missing in this story for me and I didn't lose myself in it completely. It might have been that I was setting the bar a bit too high for this sophomore novel by Perkins, Anna is a tough book to compete against...even when the book is written by the same author. I still loved Perkin's writing style and I really look forward to reading Isla and the Happily Ever After. I really hope to see more cameos of characters from her previous books make an appearance in that one. After reading Lola I have a strong suspicion on HOW that might happen but we'll have to wait and see if that's what actually happens.

Billi SanGreal Series Order
Book 1: Devil's Kiss
Book 2: Dark Goddess

Breathless.

That is the word I would use to describe this book if I was only allowed one. Thankfully, though I am able to use as many words as it takes for me to talk about this book. =) Devil's Kiss starts off with a bang - as you might imagine from that opening line - and it never really pauses hence the whole breathless feeling mentioned above. Billi SanGreal wants nothing more than to be a normal girl but that is really hard to do when your dad is head of the Knights Templar. Billi has been raised to be a knight and so her life is far from normal.

There was so much goodness in this book that I really don't know how to put it all into words. I loved the character of Billi and her interactions with those around her. I loved how her father was around and involved in her life - even though his priorities might not always be in the right place. There was romance and intrigue and  never a dull a moment. The world building was solid and what the reader doesn't know about the Knights Templer is explained and I just found the history of it all so fascinating.

Devil's Kiss is a bit darker than some other YA books out there (as you might guess by the opening line) but there is also an undertone of hope. And while things might look bleak on the surface for our heroine she always holds on to the belief that its only temporary. Another thing I loved about this book....there was no insta-love. Was there attractions? Yes...to two different guys and yet there was also no love triangle. Billi's romances in the book were all very natural and believable.

If you are looking for a fun action packed book with a strong kick-ass heroine then look no further. I fell in love with this world and I can't wait until I can find time to fit in the next book in the series into my reading schedule.

About the Narrator: At first I thought that the narrator sounded a bit old to play Billie but by the end I was in love with her voice and portrayal of the character. She handled the male voices well and it was easy to tell who was supposed to be speaking. Her reading pacing was just right and I never had any issues understanding what she was saying. This is a plus for me as I am hard of hearing. I'm not sure if Flosnik has read any other books but I'd defiantly check it out.

Cyndi Tefft Talks About Faith in YA for the #YAScramble

Greetings and salutations my blog readers!

Today I have a special treat for you. I am hosting Cyndi Tefft as part of the YA Scramble - which is an awesome collaboration of bloggers and authors who all share a love of YA Lit. Each blog (see list below) will have a guest post from a participant about the YA genre and there will be a HUGE prize if you can figure out the scramble. Most of the blogs involved are also giving away prizes separate from the grand prize - so be sure to visit them all for more chances to win lots of good stuff! So without further ado here is Cyndi's guest post.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In preparation for the launch of Between, I spent much of my springtime at the computer, contacting YA book bloggers to set up reviews and interviews. Many of them had a Review Policy noted (which I found sooooo helpful) to help authors and publishers know what types of books they'd accept for review.
I came across several (say dozens) that wouldn’t accept books with religious themes or tones.
I found this curious, since I came across only one or two who specifically noted that they wouldn't take books with mature sex scenes. Most of those were tweens who noted that their parents read the blog.
There have been countless blogs about sex in YA (how much is too much, should it happen on the page or off, should there be consequences, what about protection, etc...). There hasn't been nearly as much talk about issues of faith, though I would wager that most kids have to come to terms with where they stand on religion, too.
There was a Twitter #yalitchat session a while back on this very topic (faith in YA). I loved the interaction and the thoughts expressed by those tweeting. It was a great chat and something we should talk about more often.
I'd love to see issues of God, faith, spirituality and religion as a part of a teen's coming of age experience be poured into YA books and accepted by readers (and bloggers). Let's not be afraid of talking about God anymore than we're AFRAID of talking about sex in YA. Everyone will have a different opinion, and that's a good thing as long as we're respectful and kind.
What do you think about the topic of faith in YA books?
Be sure to comment below and be entered to win a Signed paperback copy of Between by Cyndi Tefft.
Cyndi Tefft lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest where the weather is overcast and rainy, much like the Highlands of Scotland. So she was right at home when she got the chance to visit Eilean Donan Castle in May 2010.
A self-proclaimed Scot freak, she loved every bit about the trip to Scotland: the people, the kilts, the accents, the fish & chips, the haggis...well okay, not the haggis.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Format: Paperback(ARC)
First Line: The circus arrives without warning.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is one of those rare books that is almost impossible to describe. Because in the describing you just give away the plot and when that is brought down to mere inadequate words the magic seeps out of it.  This is a book about a circus. Its a book about people and magic and mystery. Its a romance and its intrigue. Its all of those things and yet none of them at the same time. Its a book that more than anything I just want to crawl inside and spend the rest of my days living in its world.
While I may not be able to clearly define what The Night Circus  is I can tell you what its not. Its not a series, what you find in these pages is all that you will get. This was a hard one for me to deal with in this day where almost every book that comes out seems to be a series. Which is funny as I am suffering from series fatigue but I did not want this story to end. Although I loved how the story played out. All the threads that it contained were woven so intricately and subtlety that when you hit the end and you sit back you discover this amazing tapestry of a tale has been created.
This isn't a book with a lot of bells and whistles. There are no bangs or thumps in the night. There is no villain or orphaned hero who must rise up and save the day. There is just Celia and Marco. Widget and Poppet. Isobel, the twins, Bailey, Chandresh, Frederick and Prospero the Great. There are just ordinary people living extraordinary lives. Caught in this web of magic an mystery that is The Night Circus. Its a simple story with a slow burn and yet at the same time its not.
The Night Circus isn't YA. Its not Harry Potter or Twilight or whatever the next great series or widely talked about book will be. This is a book written for adults. But the themes and the story can have loads of cross over appeal. This is a book that can span generations and a 90 year old grandmother can enjoy reading and discussing it with her 17 year grandchild. Its a book that I think can appeal to both men and woman. To me, The Night Circus defies classification or labels and that I think that is giving main stream media a run for its money. People like to label things. If you like x then you're sure to like z or book a is the next c. These aren't the sort of tags that you can place on a book like The Night Circus.
The Night Circus is a book that stands all on its own. Its unique and wonderful and its a story that I've never seen before nor do I expect to see it again. Its a bit like the circus that is described in the book, one day it appears where before it was not and it will linger on in your memory long after it is gone.
