I have always loved the IDEA of tattoos and part of me will probably always want one. If I wasn't so pain phobic then I would probably get one. Although coping with the pain of getting a tattoo and dealing with that buzzing noise of the needle is one thing....deciding what to get is a whole other issue. I am horrible indecisive and could probably spend a life time debating on what to get. So I compensate with looking at other people's tattoos. I occasionally will watch LA Ink just to see what people are getting....or more specifically the story behind the tattoo. I love how there is always a story....granted some are more profound than others....but there is always some sort of meaning attached. Which is why I was so excited to receive a copy of The Word Made Flesh: Literary Tattoos from Bookworms Worldwide by Eva Talmadge and Justin Taylor for review.

The moment I pulled Literary Tattoos from its mailing envelope I started to flip through it and didn't stop until I reached the end. After that initial hurried look I then took a more leisurely browse over the next few days. Just opening the book randomly and spending more time looking at each tattoo and the description that came with it. I really liked the flow of the pictures. In one sense they are a chaotic jumble with no rhyme nor reason and yet the way they are organized makes perfect sense. I loved reading the stories and reading all the different quotes. I even cringed a few times because some of the tattoos features are so large that you know they just HAD to hurt....LOTS. Its also because of this book that I found a new internet time suck, the tumblr The World Made Flesh, which is filled with many more literary tattoos. I really enjoyed flipping through this book and if you like tattoos or literary quotes then you probably will too.

About Matched (Synopsis from GoodReads):

In the Society, Officials decide. Who you love. Where you work. When you die.

Cassia has always trusted their choices. It’s barely any price to pay for a long life, the perfect job, the ideal mate. So when her best friend appears on the Matching screen, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is the one . . . until she sees another face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. Now Cassia is faced with impossible choices: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path no one else has ever dared follow—between perfection and passion.

Matched is a story for right now and storytelling with the resonance of a classic.

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

First Line: Even before he got electrocuted, Jason was having a rotten day.

The Lost Hero is the brand new series from best-selling author Rick Riordan and in it he returns to the world of demi-gods that we fell in love with in his Percy Jackson books. The Heroes of Olympus is considered to be a spin off series but in some ways its really a continuation of the story that began with Percy Jackson. Its not a series that you'll want to read if you haven't read the books that came before. Because they world has already been created previous there is a lot of background info that gets skipped over. The assumption is made that you already know about the Greek gods still existing and the names and qualities of the major monsters that are seen. Not to mention that there are spoilers and allusions made to events of the first books.

This new series is told from the points of view of the three main characters (Jason, Piper and Leo) and I really liked the switch up in this. I loved being able to see the story come alive through the different sets of eyes. Although I have to admit that if it wasn't for the name at the top of each chapter I am not sure that I would be able to differentiate each "voice" of the characters as they all sort of blend together. The characterizations of the three mains are also reminiscent of those other characters we know and love. Jason is the leader and mirrors Percy in many qualities and mannerisms - although unlike Percy he is very away of the gods....he just can't remember everything fully. Piper is the token girl, the potential love interest and the one who just seems to know just a little bit about everything. However, unlike Annabeth she is less annoying in her knowledge and is a bit more kick ass. And Leo is the wise cracking sidekick and best friend/third wheel of Piper and Jason (aka Grover). But unlike Grover, Leo is a full fledged demi-god who is special in his own right and really holds his own in the quest. The satyrs in this series, Gleeson Hedge, is also a lot more fun than Grover ever was. Hedge is just so over the top but he never failed to make me laugh when he would try to charge into an impossible fight shouting "Die!!" As comic relief, Hedge beat out Leo every time.

The story arc is similar to what was scene in the the Percy Jackson books but there are new monsters, new battles and an added twist that helps keep the formula from being stale. I really enjoyed the new twist that Riordan added to this series. Although I will admit that it did seem to come out of left field. I just feel like it would have been better if he'd shown hints of this idea in the Percy Jackson books. Then as a reader you could have had this "AH HA!" moment when it all comes together. As it was though, you go through a small bit of confusion as you get your head wrapped around the new concept. But once you get over that hurdle of strangeness for these new bits its all love and eagerness to see where Riordan is going.

I do have to admit that while I missed Percy, I found that I really didn't miss Annabeth or Grover. Then once I got to know Jason a little more I didn't miss Percy as much. I really do hope to see a Percy and Jason meet up in the coming books. I think it would be really interesting to see those two interacting. They are so close, personality wise, that they could be really good friends or....I am at a loss for words here. I don't think they'd ever be enemies....but they could seriously butt heads that would cause strife and prevent them from fully trusting or becoming friends with each other.

I wasn't sure what to expect from The Lost Hero, spin offs are always such a tricky thing, but I ended up loving the story. I loved returning to the world that I first fell in love with in the Percy Jackson books. I loved the blend of old characters and new. If you read and loved the Percy Jackson books then I think that you will also enjoy The Heroes of Olympus. I know that I am already eagerly waiting for Book 2....which is going to be a very long wait indeed since it isn't scheduled to be released until October 2011!!

Ok....now that you are all caught up here is PART 10....which is brought to you by AMANDA HOCKING author of the Trylle Trilogy and Hollowland.
Jeremy lept forward, narrowly dodging the rotting clutch of a zombie. He landed on his stomach, his own blood making him slide ahead. Just as his fingers wrapped around the knife, another zombie dove at him. He rolled onto his back, kicking it off him and jumped to his feet.

His coven was doing a good job of keeping the zombies busy. The graveyard was alive with fire, courtesy of the demon’s fireballs. Smoke and burning flesh filled the air, and Jeremy heard his own brethren screaming, along with the moans of the zombies.

Through the flames and the fighting, Jeremy searched for the demon, but he couldn’t see him. That didn’t make sense. An eight foot demon with skin the color of burnt amber and eyes that blazed with fire shouldn’t be that hard to spot.

Jeremy ran through the fray, pushing anyone that got in his way—even if that meant pushing his own kind into the fire or a newly emptied grave. The sun would be rising soon, and he had to find the demon before he lost him forever.

The air stilled smelled of sulfur, so Jeremy knew he couldn’t be far. The knife in his hand burned, the effect of prolonged contact with silver, but Jeremy barely felt it. His mind was locked on revenge.

He had to find the demon. He had to find out what really became of Anna.

OOOHHH....wasn't that good? Curious as to what happens next? Then be sure to head over to YA ADDICT for PART 11 by clicking here.  The next installment will be up tomorrow, 27 Oct 2010. But since that is just SO far away here is a TRICK to keep you occupied until its up!

Book Trailer Monday (53): North & South

Book Trailer Monday is where once a week I feature a trailer for a book that has captured my attention. This trailer might be for a book that is about to be published, or maybe its for a book that has already been released. There won't be any rhyme or reason to the trailer that I choose....the only common denominator will be that I liked it. That it made me stop or made me think or maybe it made me laugh. I do this mainly for my own enjoyment because I love book trailers. I find them fascinating and I hope that you enjoy the ones that I show here each week as well.

This weeks trailer is for the North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell which was first published as a twenty-two-part weekly serial from September 1854 through January 1855 in the magazine Household Words, edited by Charles Dickens. The story was then later expanded and published in book form by Chapman & Hall in 1855. Ok...this trailer isn't for the book...its a fan made trailer for the 2004 BBC adaptation of the book. Even though its for the mini-series I think that it does a lot to capture the essence of the book. Mostly in part because the 2004 adaptation is just so very good. I first read this book years ago and loved it. Fell in love again when I watched the mini-series (which I now re-watch on a regular basis) and I am looking forward to re-reading the book again next month during the North & South Read-a-Long.

What did you think of this weeks selection? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Announcing the North and South Read-a-Long!

Hello everyone!

I've been talking on Twitter about doing (or finding) a classic book to do a read-a-long with. Most that I stumble on are already well under way and so I usually don't join in. Then the other day I was talking to Liz from Consumed by Books about our mutual love of the BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South. (This is such an amazing mini-series and you must watch it if you haven't already.) She also mentioned that while she's seen the mini-series several times she's never actually read the book. I've read the book but it was eons ago and so suggested that maybe we could do a read-a-long.

Therefore, starting on 01 November I am going to start reading North and South and posting weekly updates here on my thoughts. I'll post my thoughts at the end of each week and read the book using the following schedule:

Week 1: Chapters 1 - 10
Week 2: Chapters 11 - 20
Week 3: Chapters 21 - 30
Week 4: Chapters 31 - 40
Week 5: Chapters 41 - 52

There is also a good chance that I will be re-watching the mini-series after this re-read of the book...because its on Netflix Instant View and I just can't help but watch it on a regular basis. I am excited for this read-a-long because I last read North and South back when I was around 15 or so and haven't read it since. So this will almost be like reading the book for the first time as I am sure there is much that I have forgotten!

I've included a Mr Linky just in case anyone else would like to join in the read-a-long....and will have one for each weeks thought post. If you don't have a blog for the URL then you can always join via the comments. So feel free the grab the button above, the book from your nearest book store or library and join in the fun!

Girl, Stolen by April Henry

Publisher: Henry Holt & Co
Source: Received for review
Publication Date: 28 Sept 2010
Series or Standalone: Standalone
ISBN: 0805090053
Format: paperback (ARC)
Pages: 224
Websites:

Place(s) Traveled to: Portland, Oregon

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

First Line: Cheyenne heard the car door open.

The first thing that attracted me to Girl, Stolen by April Henry was the cover and then when I read they synopsis I thought that it was filled with possibility. When I learned that Girl, Stolen was going to be a part of The Contemps Challenge this book became a must have. When I received Girl, Stolen I couldn't help but peek inside and feel in love with the first chapter (see my Fragment Friday from 10 Sept.) But do to other commitments I wasn't able to pick this book up again until Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-thon.

As a read-a-thon book Girl, Stolen was a good choice. Its well written and on the short side so you get a sense of accomplishment when you are able to finish it. I'm not the fastest of readers these days so that was a big plus for me. However, the plot was just one that I've read before in Lucy Christopher's Stolen (my review). Ok...Ok...I KNOW that for the most part the similarities between the two books is very surfacy. They both have kidnapping plots and then from their they diverge. In Stolen, its planned and calculated while in Girl, Stolen its accidental and the main character is blind. In my head I know they are different and yet throughout my reading of Girl, Stolen I couldn't help but compare the two books.

Stolen was just filled with such tension and the words just leapt off the page. I didn't get that same sense of urgency or tension in Girl, Stolen. Cheyenne is supposed to be sick, really sick, and yet except for the occasional bought of coughing she never seemed sick to me. And if it wasn't for the author occasionally saying how sick Cheyenne was I never would have thought about it. So that whole aspect of the plot just seemed so forced and didn't ring true. Another forced plot point, was the romance. Not every book needs to have romance in it for a reader to enjoy it. I never got that pang in my heart feeling when it came to Griffin and Cheyenne. Never felt like they had any real connection other than he was her accidental kidnapper. They were just sort of tossed together and as a result their interactions just came across a bit flat for me.

Girl, Stolen was a quick read and I did like the overall writing of it. I liked how the story was told from the points of view of both Cheyenne and Griffin. I liked how the chapter numbers weren't just plain numbers on a page but merged into a drawing of a cars rear view mirror. I believe that April Henry will be an author that I pick up in the future even though this book didn't wow me. I just think that my perception of this particular book of hers was tainted by my reading a similar story first. I think that I would have enjoyed Girl, Stolen a lot more if I had read it before I read Stolen. I know that I am probably being unfair to Girl, Stolen in the comparison but I just can't help it. I didn't hate it but at the same time I didn't love it either. I am not sure if I can recommend it but will say that if you are interested in it then to read it before you read Stolen. I wish I had so that I could be a bit more fair to Girl, Stolen.

The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan

Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Source: Purchased by me
Publication Date: 05 May 2009
Series or Standalone: Series (order listed below)
ISBN: 1423101472
Format: Hardcover
Pages: 400
Websites:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

First Line: The end of the world started when a pegasus landed on the hood of my car.

The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series has been one that I've loved since reading the first book, The Lightning Thief. It was also a series that I started late in the game and so was spoiled in having ready access to all the books with the exception of the fifth and final book. I blazed through the first four in the story fairly quickly, listening to them on audio in my car and just becoming so entranced with the idea of demigods and the Greek Gods still walking amongst us mere mortals. So I hated the wait from when I finished The Battle of the Labyrinth to when Last Olympian was released. I immediately purchased it at the store because I didn't want to wait for the audio at my library. The book then sadly languished for far longer than it should have before I had a chance to read it. When I did though it was instant love.

The Last Olympian is the first book in the series that I actually read in the print form and while I missed the narrator from the audios I could still sometimes here his cadences as I read the lines from the characters. As this was the last book in a five book story ARC events quickly got under way and as a reader I was swept along with them. This story was a little darker then the previous installments. There were more battles and as a result, more losses. Heroes rose in some of the most unlikely sources and I found myself cheering along with the other campers. The action was edge of your seat and even though you know in the back of your head that all will be well, that the Titans won't win, you still have those moments of doubt as our heroes are faced with such daunting odds.

For me, while I've loved the overall story ARC in the Percy Jackson series, it has had its ups and downs. The Last Olympian though definitely falls on the up side of things and I think that it is my favorite of all the books in this series. I've loved watching all the characters grow from the first book to really coming into their own with this one. There is an ending, a solid ending that leaves the reader happy and satisfied. An ending, that even if you didn't know that Rick Riordan was working on a spin off series you would be content to say good-bye to Camp Half-Blood.

Book 2: The Sea of Monsters
Book 3: The Titan's Curse

This weeks trailer is for the Plain Kate by Erin Bow which was published by Arthur A Levine Books on 01 Sept 2010. I really love the simplicity of this trailer. The music is interesting and sets such a great tone and I just love the flow of the graphics. As a whole it makes me want to read this book and after I first saw this trailer I picked up Plain Kate at my local bookstore. I haven't had a chance to get to it yet but everything I've heard about this book says that its absolutely amazing. So I am looking forward to the read.

Four Things Meme

Michelle of Reclusive Bibliophile, tagged me on this four things meme and I thought that I would give it a go.

4 Things That Are In My Handbag
1. My wallet
2. A mini pad & pen - because you never know when you'll need to write something down.
3. Business cards for my blog. I've learned its best to always have them on me as you never know when you'll need them.
4. A book or my nook (don't leave home without one or the other)

4 Things In/On My Desk
As I don't have a desk I am going to substitute my coffee table. :-)
1. My current cup of coffee. Its a several cup kinda day.
2. A stack of books.
3. Remotes that govern my electronics.
4. A candle.

4 Favorite Things In My Bedroom
1. Piles and piles of books. There are so many of them, all just waiting to be read. (stealing this from Michelle because its true for me as well)
2. My bed....because I LOVE LOVE LOVE sleep.
3. A candle - I have them everywhere. I love the pretty scents that they make. And as Karsten Knight points out in this vlog they can really set the mood when reading.
4. My signed books. Because I LOVE signed books and so they have their own special place.

4 Things I’ve Always Wanted To Do (but haven’t yet)
1. I'd love to just hop in my car and travel across the country with no real plan in mind. There are so many great & curious things out there to discover - like Stonehenge II (Texas), The Globe (Utah), and the Paperclip boxcar/Holocaust memorial (Tennessee).
2. To travel to China, Southeast Asia, Israel, Turkey, Australia, Russia, and all over Europe
3. To win millions of dollars so I don't have to worry about money which will let me travel and read to my hearts content
4. To try a whole new job industry....but that is crazy scary and hard to do.

4 Things I Enjoy Very Much At The Moment

4. Chipolte. (mmm....so nomtastic)

2. Crushed and Created by Caitlyn Smith - this one has been played over and over on my iTouch...its just so BEAUTIFUL.
3. Storybook Love by Will DeVille. From The Princess Bride and I'm just so in love with this song.
4. How by Kathrine McPhee

4 Things You Don’t Know About Me
1. I love to hang out with friends but I can also be a pretty reclusive and solitary person.
2. I HATE talking on the phone. There are no words to how much I detest it. I have no reason for this either as I used to LIVE on the phone all through HS. My parents got call waiting because of me. And I once had a cell phone that would let me talk for 3 hours and 38 min before dropping the call - every time. I know because a friend and I would talk until it did.
3. I love the smell and sounds of libraries....especially the older ones.
4. Gowing up one nickname that my parents had for me was "The Mad Baker"

Tag 4 people:

Event Recap: James Dashner Kicks off the Scorch Trials Tour & a Contest!

Greetings and Salutations everyone!

Its me Irish, your faithful event reporter, here to tell you about another great signing that happened here in The Bay State. And this one, my internet friends was even better than most because not only have I met James Dashner a few times prior but I went to not one....but TWO of his signings. That's right....you heard me....I am a total stalker girl...do you see what I do to my reputation just for you - my faithful readers?

The first even happened at the Borders in Braintree, MA on 13 October - the day after the release of Dashner's book The Scorch Trials was released. Scorch Trials is the second book in his Maze Runner Trilogy and was so very good...I talk more about it in this open letter post here. The Braintree event wasn't very well attended. I blame this on the store more than anything else for lack of promotion. After all when I went up to the register to buy the book before the signing started the person running the register didn't even know there was a book signing. *sighs* But since I knew I had been tweeting about it and gathered a few other local bloggers and authors to come including Kim Harrington (author of Clarity, Mar 2011), Karsten Knight (author of Wildfire, July 2011), Leah Cypess (author of Mistwood, out now), Dani J (of Overflowing Bookself) and Danielle B (of Frenzy of Noise).

I had heard rumors that Karsten Knight was a vampire (or batman) and was hoping to get proof of this for Leah Clifford and I think that the rumors might be true. He snuck into the event after I had arrived and I swear it just appeared in the audience while we were all distracted. Sudden appearances are signs of Vampirism, yes? (Although same could be said for batman.) And when we left to go to dinner it was dark so there were no instances of bursting into flames or sparkling and I don't think his meal contained garlic. And my final clue that the rumors might be true....he was dressed all in black. So...vampire, batman...mortal man? I still don't have the answer. But I shall continue to investigate and be sure to report back my findings.

But anywho...investigating Karsten Knight's secret identity aside. We spent some time in the store sitting around and chatting about the book and writing in general, James signed our books and then we all went to dinner. Dinner was a fun event filled with stories about getting agents and other bookish talk. It was a good time and I think fun was had by all.

James was in town for two nights and the initial plan had been to go to his signing in Burlington, MA on 14 Oct but then the switch to Wednesday happened - and good thing too otherwise he'd have been sitting in that Borders all alone. I hadn't planned on going to two signings but earlier on the 14th Danielle B had asked me what I was doing. I told her nothing since my original plan had been to go to the Burlington BN. She said the same and then asked if I wanted to still go. And so we went. We arrived a little early to learn that the store had expanded their YA section and so we wandered around that until 7. Then we headed over to the area in the store where the event was.

My one complaint about this event is that they didn't have any chairs for people to sit in. Every other event I've been to in this location had places to sit and it was a bit awkward standing around and sitting on the floor. James started off talking a little bit about the series and then opened things up to questions. This event was better attended and the Q&A is as follows. Including two local (and new to me) bloggers, Nikki of Wicked Awesome Books and Emily of Dragons Ate my Homework (can I just say, LOVE the name of this blog. lol)

As always I may have misheard something so please double check any facts before taking them as truth. :-)

What is the premise of The Death Cure (Maze Runner, Book 3, Fall 2011)?

Well. You see things. You see what life is like in a real city. A different city than as seen in The Scorch Trials, which when you read the book you know isn't the nicest of places. And that's about all I can say about Book 3 for now.

What was it like writing the series?

Started The Maze Runner about 5 yrs ago before he had an agent or publisher. He wanted a high concept, big picture, scary, crazy awesome. story. The book was influenced by Ender's Game & Lord of the Flies. Writing The Scorch Trials was a whole different experience as he already had a publisher and he had less less time to complete the story. Of the three books in the series he had more fun of writing Scorch Trials than any other book. He is currently working on the third book now.

At this point he then mentioned how in there is an EXCLUSIVE Barnes & Noble paperback edition of the Maze Runner which includes extra content in the form of memos from WICKED.

Do you name characters in any special way?

Not normally. The names in Maze Runner do mean something though. There is a reason for all the names. and it will make sense once the book is read. He doesn't really put much thought into names and just uses what pops into head & sometimes they are names of people he knows.

What are the grievers made of?

They are part machine and part biological creations. They are very complex and he doesn't have enough time to explain them all fully. The series is set about about 200 years in the future and so there is lots of advanced technology that was created before the Flares happened and disrupted society.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Yes but haven't always made money at it. At first he listened to practical side in college and studied accounting. Spent 8 yrs doing that. But is now able to work as full time writer. He's busier now but its 90% fun.

Who is your favorite character in the Maze Runner Trilogy?

Minho. He's kinda a smart alec who pretends to be tough. He wishes that Minho was in the story a bit more and he misses him when he's not there.

(My 2 cents James? Sounds like great potential for a short story at some point. *grin*)

What are you reading now and what is your favorite book?

He's currently reading Under the Dome by Stephen King. Its the first ebook he's ever bought and read. But he has a new iPad and thought he'd give it a try. Even though he always swore he wouldn't as he didn't think eh'd like ebooks. So far though he's really enjoyed the experience and has learned that its the words that matter. Not the form that they come in. The story can still touch and suck you in. Not that he'll give up physical books anytime soon and thinks that both formats will exist for a long time to come.

As for a favorite that's hard to pick. If he wanted to sound smart he would say Les Miserables. But then he'd have to admit that he only read the abridged version. He did say that it did have a profound effect on him though. But for favorite book....for that he'd have to break is life into two periods and would pick Ender's Game and for the second, The Stand. He then mentioned that Under the Dome is a bit like The Stand in feel.

What are your favorite movies?

That was another touch question to answer as he loves movies almost as much as he loves books....maybe even more so. But off the top of his head he named Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Aliens, and The Town.

Will there be a movie of the Maze Runner?

His dream is to write a screen play for a movie or even if he could just co-write one. He'd even love to just have any of his books made into a movie. But as of now there is nothing planned. Maybe with the next series. In the mean time if anything develops he'll be sure to announce it on his blog, The Dashner Dude.

James then signed books for everyone who came and spent a few minutes talking to everyone as they came up. Many of those who came were at schools that he attended throughout the day and he remembered who they were and you could just see the smiles on their faces that he did.

After the general signing he got to work and signed a TON of stock for the store. And I mean a TON. So if you can't make it to a James Dashner signing there is a good bet that if you call the Burlington BN that they'll have singed copies of Maze Runner and the Scorch Trials. The store rep who was there as James signed stock said that the store would ship if people called and asked about signed books.

The Near Witch Cover Reveal!!

After much teasing and hinting on Twitter Victoria Schwab has revealed her cover for her upcoming debut The Near Witch. But this isn't your regular static cover reveal....no....that just isn't the Victoria way. So instead we have this wonderfully cute vlog. Which shows the book from all angles and it has some very pretty angles.

For those whose reader strips the video the URL link is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot2hxL_cCcc&feature=sub

A little about the book:
The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children.
If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company.
There are no strangers in the town of Near.

These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life. But when an actual stranger—a boy who seems to fade like smoke—appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.

The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him.

As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi’s need to know—about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.

Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab’s debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won’t soon forget.

And if that isn't enough to make you want to pick up this novel then check out this video where part of the first chapter is read:

Doesn't that sound FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC?!?! I can't WAIT for this one!!

The Near Witch will be available on 02 August 2011 from Disney Hyperion so pre-order your copy today!

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard

Publisher: HarperTeen
Source: Borrowed from Library
Publication Date: 01 Oct 2006
Series or Standalone: Series (Book 1)
ISBN: 0060887303
Format: Paperback
Pages: 286
Websites:

Place(s) Traveled to: Rosewood, Pennsylvania

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

First Line: Imagine it's a couple of years ago, the summer between seventh and eighth grade.

The main reason that I picked up Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard was because Pop Culture Junkie was raving about it on Twitter. She became so addicted to this series to the exclusion of all other books for her at the time. I became curious about this series that could hold someone so entrall that I immediately put a copy of it on hold at my local library. Unfortunately, this series didn't live up to my expectations of the story. The story is told from the point of view of the four main characters - bouncing between them all to keep the story going. I love stories with the multiple POV aspect because you tend to get a more well rounded look at what is going on.

In Pretty Little Liars though this multiple POV didn't always work for me because I really didn't like any of the characters. All four girls are horribly flawed and they don't really have any redeeming qualities about them. Hannah, Spencer, Aria and Emily all used to be friends. Part of a clique held together by Allison who disappeared mysteriously one summer. Allison held the group together with secrets and lies and without her manipulation they fell apart and went their separate ways. But when the body of Allison is discovered, and the girls start receiving ominous messages from someone named A they are brought back together in a tense relationship.

For much of this book I kept waiting for something to happen. I kept waiting to be spooked by the mysterious messages. But instead I just ended up annoyed more than anything else. The writing of the story wasn't the best and I kept getting reminded of the book Gossip Girls - which is another book about spoiled rich kids who get away with far more than they should because of looks and money. As with Gossip Girl I find that I liked the tv show better than the written text. In the book the girls just lack something that gives other characters life and makes them interesting. I was very meh about this story and am unsure if I'll ever read the rest of the books. I've heard that they get better as more of the mystery surrounding Allison's disappearance is revealed but I'm just not sure if they are worth the effort. I don't know....maybe one day.

Read-a-thon Update: 2 am to 8 am

Title of book(s) read since last update:
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins (just starting)

Breathless by Jessica Warman (abandoned for the moment)
Girl, Stolen by April Henry
You by Charles Benoit
The ABCs of Kissing Boys by Tina Ferraro

Thoughts on current read:
So put down Breathless in order to read Anna and the French Kiss and I only made it 50 pages before falling asleep. I knew the switch to my bed would not be conducive to reading but my back was hurting a little from spending so much time on my couch. Anna is a long-ish book and 50 pages doesn't get you very far into the story but so far I am liking the glimpses into a Paris boarding school and the cast of characters that I have met. I look forward to reading more! As always the read-a-thon was a lot of fun and I look forward to the April edition. Hopefully next time I'll break 1000 pages. =)

Thoughts on current read:

Ugh...this book is filled with repetitive information. The main character, Katie is a bit whiny...not only that but she's a very selfish and conceited personality. Its actually become a bit annoying to be inside of her head. The story is still a bit disjointed with random jumps in time. The secondary characters are also underdeveloped and underutilized. Their actions all seem so forced - especially Mazzie's.  Drew - Katie's boyfriend is just so two-dimensional and blah. What about him is so great? We never really get to know who he is. Warman says they talk all the time and have great conversations but we never get to see them. And the obsession with swimming...ugh!!! There is much telling to the reader about her love of swimming and how great Katie is at it to the exclusion of anything else in her personality. Katie is so very conceited about it saying often her swim team only does well because of her. But the school had a reputation for swimming and winning big meets before she ever arrived! Her ego is just one of the many things that annoy me about her personality. I have 123 pages left in this book but think I might abandon it for now and move onto a more enjoyable story for these wee hours of the read-a-thon. I think I will finish it though just to see how it all ends.

Title of book(s) read since last update:
Breathless by Jessica Warman (in progress)
Girl, Stolen by April Henry
You by Charles Benoit
The ABCs of Kissing Boys by Tina Ferraro

Thoughts on current read:
Girl, Stolen - finished this one and the ending was a bit off for me. Can't really say much without spoiling but in the end this is a 3 star read. Good, not great.

Breathless - The narrative is a bit disjointed and the start was a little slow but things are starting to pick up a little as the main character Katie starts to settle into the boarding school.

The ABCs of Kissing Boys by Tina Ferraro

Thoughts on current read:
I'm getting a little tired and so my reading is slowing down a bit. I am still reading and liking Girl, Stolen. I like the interaction between Griffin and Cheyenne. The overall storyline though isn't as strong as other kidnapping books that I've read. I think this one one that I think I'd be enjoying a lot more if I'd read it before Lucy Christopher's Stolen. I'm also glad that I put some distance between reading Stolen and this book else my enjoyment would probably be lower.

So far, so good. Story is told in short chapters from 2 points of view. Cheyenne (the girl who is kidnapped) and Griffin (the boy who did the kidnapping). I love multip-POV stories and so am looking forward to reading more.

Thoughts on current read:
You is a book that is supposed to blow you away. I've heard some describe it as life altering. But I don't find it to be either of those things. It was a different and unique read I will give it that. But I'm really not sure how I feel about it. Right now its a bit meh and not a book that I find very memorable. Right now I rate it at 3 stars. Moving on to Girl, Stolen.
