Event Recap or OMG I Talked to Suzanne Collins!!!

Ever since I first heard that Suzanne Collins was coming to the Boston area as part of her stamping tour for Mockingjay I've been waffling on if I wanted to go or not. I even went and pre-ordered some stamped books from Oblong Books as a just in case I didn't go to a Boston event. Then this morning I had a message from my friend Kim asking if I was going to the Brookline Library event or if I was going to wait for the one later on tonight in Wellesley. I looked at the time and thought for all off 1/2 a minute and said I will meet you in Brookline!

Parking was an experience as the library is under construction and my street parking skills have always left much to be desired. But I did manage to find a lot not too terribly far away and it was a short walk to the library were I grabbed my ticket and waited for Kim to arrive.

Kim and I were each pretty antsy to meet Suzanne Collins....more so than either of us thought we would be and we made small talk as we waited for her to arrive. The event started with Suzanne Collins doing a reading from Catching Fire introducing what she calls her Futuristic Appalachian accent that she hears in her head as Katniss's voice. Following that she then read from the first chapter of Mockingjay and it was just so amazing to hear her read aloud. Like Kim I also learned that I'd been saying Panem wrong in my head. Which is just one thing that I love about author events - hearing how the author intended for things to be. =)

Suzanne Collins reading from CF and MJ
Following the reading we all got into a semi-organized line by number and waited for our turn to get our books stamped.

Kim getting her book stamped

The line moved pretty quickly and Suzanne talked a little bit with everyone who stopped by. My mind was pretty blank and I spent most of the time bouncing and grinning like a loon. And to think I was telling Kim not five minutes before that we'd both be cool chickens and wouldn't fangirl out. Yay....who was I kidding? Kim was also kind enough to get all this captured on film.

OMG SC is TALKING to me!!!

My mind is total mush right here
I didn't say anything significant to Suzanne Collins. I wasn't uber cool. No I was a huge DORK. I had a total stupid grin on my face and Suzanne was so nice and thanked me for coming to which I so geekily responded 'No, thank YOU for coming!' I then proceeded to stare at my stamped copy of Mockingjay and proceeded to walk back to my seat. I was half way down the aisle when Kim pulled me back and reminded me to get my camera. Didn't I tell you I was uber cool? There was some laughter and a red faced me but it was totally worth it for this:

OMG its me and Suzanne Collins!!!

It was a fun afternoon and I was so glad that I went. I also must learn to accept that despite my best efforts I will always geek out over my favorite authors. So authors, if you are reading this I apologize in advance when we meet and I'm just a puddle of mush. Please don't hold it against me I really am sane. I swear.

First Line: The planet was once a paradise, Grandfather used to say, a lush world with forests of the crispest green, seas of the deepest blue.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I adore cheesy B rated movies. If you follow me on Twitter then chances are good you've caught me tweeting about some bad movie or another as I watch it on the SyFy channel (or similar). The cheezier the better...well...usually there are exceptions to this and there are a few movies that are just so bad that even the cheese of them can't save them. So if you like a good cheesy movie then chances are good that you will enjoy Killer Cows by D.M. Anderson.

Killer Cows is told from the point of view of Randy Meyer who is the new kid in a small small town and desperately missing the city life his mom pulled him from. As with most small towns there isn't much to do so Randy spends a lot of his time renting movies at the local video store, discovering such classics as The Day the Earth Stood Still - the original not that horror of a remake. Life is pretty dull in Satus Creek until the day a meteor hits and things start to change. Its also around this time that Randy meets Cody who is a bit slow and considered to be the weird kid at school.

The two form an unlikely (and partly unwilling) friendship which is realistic in its origins and execution. My one issue is that Randy always calls Cody "Little Dude" - the two are the same age and it just always came across as really odd to me. Especially when others who joined their small circle did the same. Little Dude isn't a nickname for a teen boy - even if he is shorter than normal - its a nickname that is better left to adults referring to younger children. But maybe that's just me.

I was also a bit disappointed that the killer cows of the title were not featured in the plot as much as I thought they would be. There were a few scenes of them chasing the town bully and his fast cars but they were a largely under used plot line. Which I found strange since the title of the book was Killer Cows and the picture is this cow with eerie glowing eyes. These are the things that attracted me to this book. Instead I got a flying saucer and kids in space. Which was fun and campy and made me wish that I had a flying saucer....but still I really did miss the killer cows. Throughout most of the book I just kept waiting for that plot line to develop and I think that put a bit of a damper on my overall thoughts of the book.

Despite the lack of killer cows rampaging through the town this was a quick read and I read it in just a couple of sittings. It was entertaining and fun and even had a few laugh out loud moments. The characters aren't always very 3D but this isn't a bad thing because they'd fit in so well in Syfy's movie of the week. As I said before if you like cheesy B rated movies then you should definitely check this one out.

Book Trailer Monday (47): Nothing Like You by Lauren Strasnick (draft)

Book Trailer Monday is where once a week I feature a trailer for a book that has captured my attention. This trailer might be for a book that is about to be published, or maybe its for a book that has already been released. There won't be any rhyme or reason to the trailer that I choose....the only common denominator will be that I liked it. That it made me stop or made me think or maybe it made me laugh. I do this mainly for my own enjoyment because I love book trailers. I find them fascinating and I hope that you enjoy the ones that I show here each week as well.

This weeks trailer is for the Nothing Like You  by Lauren Strasnick which was published by Simon Pulse on 03 Aug 2010. This trailer was made by Lauren Strasnick and I first saw it when Courtney Summers tweeted about it. My first reaction was that it made me giggle and I had to watch it again. The second, third and fourth times watching I kept giggling. And each time I've watched since it has made me laugh. Its just such a fun and imaginative trailer and I just love every minute of it! I am also now very curious about the book and don't be surprised if you see it on Mt TBR in the very near future.

What did you think of this weeks selection? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Contest for Alexis, Hannah and Rae from the Louder Than Words Series

Thanks the the wonder generosity of HCI Books and TLC Blog Tours I have an amazing contest to share with you for the three most recent titles in the Louder Than Words Series: Alexis, Hannah and Rae. That's right one lucky winner will receive all three books but that's not all. A second person will receive a copy of Alexis - which is brilliant and you should read it (my review).

Here's a little about what each of the books are about:

In Alexis, Alexis Singer gives an honest voice to the very real phenomenon of online solicitation. In Alexis, she shares her harrowing story of being sucked into an emotionally dependent and cybersexual relationship by an older man she met in a chat room. “I probably would have forgotten about that first online conversation if it weren’t for his surprising interest in me…I would have dismissed him as just another creep,” Alexis writes.

In Hannah, author Hannah Westberg writes, “The psych ward is where you go to get from fragile to shattered. It’s like taking your car to get washed and getting your windshield broken in the process.” As told through brutally honest vignettes, Hannah brings the reader into one teen’s world of dangerous behaviors—from pill popping and excessive dieting to cutting and suicide attempts—brought on by the author’s borderline personality disorder.

In Rae, brilliant young author Chelsea Rae Swiggett writes, “If I keep acting normal, I hope one day I will be, but every time I try, I just let myself down.” This incredible memoir gives an inside glimpse of living life with a condition more and more common in today’s teens—severe anxiety disorder.

Part of what is so remarkable about these books are that they are true stories written by real teens. Now for the contest details:

- 1 Winner will receive the entire set of books: Alexis, Hannah and Rae
- 1 Winner will receive Alexis
- This contest is open only to those with a US/Canada mailing address
- This contest will end at Midnight EST on 04 Sept 2010
- To enter fill out THIS ENTRY FORM - entries left in the comments won't be counted.

Any questions? Please ask in the comments or email me at irisheyz_5 AT yahoo DOT com. Prize is provided by the publisher and will be mailed out by them.

Work in Progress Wednesday (1)

Today I learned of a new meme hosted by Tami of Tami's Amis and Other Crochet in which you show off what you are working on, craft wise, during the week. I learned of this meme from Pop Culture Junkie when she encouraged me to join on Twitter. I can be a slow crafter so I'm not sure if I'll do this weekly or if I do then you might see the same thing over and over...so hopefully I won't bore anyone too much.

Anywho....onto my project. I do have a few in progress but most are on hold so I will only show the one that I am actively working on which is the first of two blankets for a friend of mine who is expecting twins. =) The pattern I am using comes from a booklet called Cuddle-Me Layettes and I am working off a PDF copy that was sent to me by a friend. The blanket should be done in a single color using a size F hook. But I like to change things up a bit so I decided to use 2 colors and a Size I hook.

I started by chaining 143 stitches using Caron brand yarn in a Sky Blue (508) color. After 6 rows I switched to  Red Heart Super Saver Sh. Dusk (Color 0984) which is a multicolored yarn in various shades of blue. I used the multi yarn for 4 rows and then switched back to the Sky Blue. Here is the current status of my project.

I am currently at 15 rows of 89 and so still have a long way to go. My plan is to do the bulk of the blanket in the Sky Blue with another Multi towards the end and to have the border in Multi. This may change as I go however, we'll see. Well I think I'm gonna go work some more on this blanket so that I have some progress to show off next week!

First Line: I wish I had known the future when an instant message (IM) popped up in the top right corner of my laptop screen on June 29, 2007.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up Alexis by Alexis Singer. Yes I knew it was a memoir about her experience with an online predator but that was it. Most of what I know about online predators comes from shows like Dateline's To Catch a Predator or an episode of Law & Order's SVU both of which tend to show the after and never the how or why. And as you watch those shows its easy to sit back and think how stupid some of these girls can be to allow themselves to be lead into such a situation. But then its easy to judge when you are a third party viewer. Which is what makes Alexis such an important read for teens and parents alike.

It can be easy to think that online predators start big and that the people that they victimize should know better. What Alexis shows is that its never a big moment but like with so many things in life there is a slow build. A slow and steady drip that doesn't seem like much at first until suddenly the pressure has built up so much that the dam breaks. Alexis is your ordinary teenage girl who is feeling a little lost and alone and so like so many teens she resorts to finding solace in online chat rooms. There is something so freeing in being anonymous and in finding comfort in people who seem to understand. It can almost be like a drug at times. By reading Alexis I understand just how easy it can be to be sucked in and Alexis's story really highlights just how scary a place the internet can be.

The internet has become a fact of life and is only going to become more integral in the every day lives as time goes on. And as cell phones get smarter and computers get smaller its going to be even easier for the predators of the world to reach teens....and adults alike. So books like Alexis become crucial. Her story is one that can happen to anyone. as its all too easy to be lured in by a sympathetic voice on the other side of an Instant Message. So parents pay attention to what your children are doing online. You don't have to hover over their shoulder every instant they are online but check their browsing history, know their passwords and pay attention to any changes in behavior. Teens, be open with your parents and don't think they are stuffy or that they don't understand. Its so much harder to be a parent in these modern times and so while you may think they are being paranoid they just love you and don't want harm to come to you.

But its not just teens or parents who should read Alexis as her story is one that can happen to adults as well. Predators don't just go after teens and while you might think that it won't happen to you. Well, I'm sure that Alexis probably thought that too and believed in it until it did happen to her. The internet can be a huge resource and its so great to have the world at ones fingertips. But its not with out its dark side and everyone needs to be on guard. Alexis is an amazing story that is beautifully written. It is raw and honest and I devoured it in a single sitting. I was completely sucked into her story and admire her courage in putting it all down on paper for the world to read. Hers is not an easy story to tell and I am not sure I'd be brave enough to do it.

Have an ereader? Why not download Shadow Hills?

Hello Internet!!!

So most of the buzz surrounding today is around the release of Mockingjay which is the third and final book in Suzanne Collin's Hunger Games trilogy. But that is just one of the amazing things you can buy today. You can also download the ebook version of Shadow Hills by Anastacia Hopcus!

For those who haven't heard of this book here is the Indieboud.org synopsis:
After her sister Athena's tragic death, it's obvious that grief-stricken Persephone "Phe" Archer no longer belongs in Los Angeles. Hoping to make sense of her sister's sudden demise and the cryptic dreams following it, Phe abandons her bubbly LA life to attend an uptight East Coast preparatory school in Shadow Hills, MA -- a school which her sister mysteriously mentioned in her last diary entry before she died.

Once there, Phe quickly realizes that something is deeply amiss in her new town. Not only does Shadow Hills' history boast an unexplained epidemic that decimated hundreds of its citizens in the 1700s, but its modern townies also seem eerily psychic, with the bizarre ability to bend metal. Even Zach -- the gorgeous stranger Phe meets and immediately begins to lust after -- seems as if he is hiding something serious. Phe is determined to get to the bottom of it. The longer she stays there, the more she suspects that her sister's untimely death and her own destiny are intricately linked to those who reside in Shadow Hills.
Still not convinced then read my thoughts on it here. Shadow Hills is an excellent debut novel that is a wonderful addition to the paranormal genre - especially since it is one of the few that doesn't focus on vampires or werewolves. So what are you waiting for visit your local bookstore and pick up a copy today or better yet download it to your eReader and start reading it instantly!.
Buy for Sony eReader (epub will work on any eReader device)

Teaser Tuesdays: Salvaged by Stefne Miller

Its been a while since I participated in this meme but with Mockingjay coming out today I'm a little busy reading and so didn't have time to put up a review...so here is a blast from my blogging past. Enjoy! =)

Teaser Tuesdays hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading asks you to:

1. Grab your current read.
2. Let the book fall open to a random page.
3. Share with us a couple of “teaser” sentences from that page.
4. You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your “teaser” from … that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!
5. One final thing...please avoid spoilers!

My sentences are:
"I placed Baby back in her prison, and she whimpered for a few moments before making her way to the back of the cage. "I don't know why she's always in that corner. She looks so sad and lonely back there.

Riley walked up behind me and peeked into the cage. "Nobody puts baby in a corner."

Event Recap: Rebecca Maizel Book Launch

Pile of Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel

Last Friday, 13 August 2010, I met up with Danielle (Frenzy of Noise) and we drove into the wilds of Rhode Island to attend Rebecca's Maizel's launch party for her debut book Infinite Days. The event took place at Books on the Square in Providence, RI and I thought it was the cutest little bookstore! Their YA section isn't bad either though it did lack some most excellent books (Sea, Brightly Woven, Shadow Hills, Rise of Renegade X, et al *le sigh*) Although they did have Angie Fraizer's Everlasting, Lucy Christopher's Stolens and Jandy Nelson's The Sky is Everywhere so they weren't entirely lacking. ;-)

The store was set up to host a large crowd and they weren't to be disappointed as people arrived from all over New England to attend. There was also a HUGE spread of food for everyone who came.

And if all that wasn't enough I came with a bag of some very delicious cookies handmade by the uber sweet and wonderful Victoria Schwab to celebrate the occasion. The cookies arrived the day before and after doing a very careful QC taste test I almost held back bringing them....you know...in case there was some latent poison or something mixed into the batter. I was only thinking of Rebecca and Danielle's health in this decision...but they both overruled me saying they'd take the risk.

Danielle, Rebecca and I sharing cookies.....nom nom nom

The store even had a chair set up for the reading that was fit for a queen, Lenah Beaudonte would have been pleased. You know, if she was real and could appreciate such things.

Close up of display next to the chair

The event started about 20 min past 7 or so and took Rebecca's sister ordering her to sit and do a reading. Rebecca was having a ton of fun greeting people and signing books. I also really wish I'd filmed this event because the interactions between Rebecca and her sister provided much comic relief. Seriously, these two should set up a comedy act if the whole writing thing doesn't work out. ;-) Once Rebecca's sister got her wrangled into the chair, Rebecca started by reading two sections of Infinite Days. She read from the opening chapter when Lenah becomes human again and then from a flashback scene that shows how Lenah became a vampire in the first place.

After the reading the floor was opened up for Q&A which I recorded as best I could. The questions and answers were all sent out rapid fire so any and all errors in this account are mine and mine alone.

Where did you get the name Lenah Beaudonte?

Beaudonte is an old medieval name and Lenah is just a name she pulled from her head.

Where did you get the idea for Infinite Days?

Rebecca has been asked this in a few interviews and really wishes that she had some funny story to go along with it. Like how she slipped and fell in a stair well and the story and characters just appeared to her. The reality isn't so funny though, she was at a writer's institute getting her master's and began free writing one day and that's when Lenah appeared. She had a very distinct voice and she just wouldn't go away. The audio version of Infinite Days captures Lenah's voice almost exactly as it sounds in Rebecca's head.

How long did it take to write Infinite Days?

It took 8 months to write, which is really really fast for a book and certainly not the norm.  There were also very little changes made to the overall story as well and what you have in print is pretty much how it was written. With the exception of how it starts. The original opening was a lot more bloody and violent as Lenah is trying to kill a librarian. The sequel for Infinite Days, which is currently titled Stolen Nights (18 Mar 2011), took over a year to complete and was a lot more difficult.

The entire story for Infinite Days was motivated by Lenah's voice. But when it came to book 2 Lenah's voice just wasn't there. Instead it was motivated by a character named Vicken - who has a larger role in book 2 than in Infinite Days, where he is a bad guy.

How did you get Lenah's voice back?

Did a lot of improv to find her again. Both acting parts out, out loud and in writing them out. She would also improv for villians in the book and highly recommends the process for when a writer gets really stuck.

What is your writing process like? How long do you write?

Rebecca writes from 7-10 am and then will take a break to go to the gym and do other errands. When she returns she'll write for another 3 hours - along with checking Facebook, Twitter and email. So it should come as no surprise that she gets more work done during the first 3 hour block of writing.

Do you know how the Trilogy ends?

Yes, but she's not entirely sure how she'll get there. But she knows the last line and all the major things that will happen.

Ever think about writing a book from Rhode's point of view?

Would love to write one one day as his voice is so strong.

Will all the books be told from Lenah's point of view?

She can't say. But she did let slip that the prologue form book 2 is from Rhode's POV.

Did you always see the story as a series?

Her editor would like her to say yes.

What else are you working on?

She is working on a realistic fiction story that involves a 15 year old girl who pretends to be older when she meets a 22 year old guy.

*Rebecca is handed a note* Did you know your great great grandmother was named Lena?

No, she didn't know that.

It was also around this time that Rebecca went off on a tangent and talked about Mercy Lena Brown, who was suspected of being a vampire in Rhode Island in the late 1800's.

Do you have to be in any specific mood to write?

Not really. But when she does write she tends to choreograph scenes and doesn't always write linerally. She tends to write the scenes that speak to her most and then figures out how they all work together. She'll also sometimes use music to help choreograph scenes too. She'll also take lots of walks and tends to write better after a run. And cupcakes, Victoria Schwab should like that.

After the Q&A even more food was brought out....including....you guessed it CUPCAKES!

Cupcakes with bite!
These cupcakes where really really good and came in vanilla, chocolate and red velvet. Was so hard to eat just one! There was also a scrumtastic desert platter filled with lots of goodies.

As people were eating cupcakes and drinking champagne...yes there was champagne! Rebecca Maizel really knows how to host a launch party! lol Rebecca signed book after book after book. Some people brought books up by the armload and I think the store was  worried they might run out!

Danielle getting her book signed
After Rebecca finished signing she ate some of the delicious cupcakes and them schmoozed with the crowd. She is a bright and bubbly person who is quick to laugh and I was very glad to meet her. If she ever comes to your area you should make an effort to stop by, while I can't promise that she'll always bring cupcakes and champagne I can promise that she'll bring a lot of laughs.

Rebecca and me

First Line: The demon exploded in a shower if ichor and guts.

If I had to walk away from this years Book Expo America (BEA) this past May with only one book then that book would have had to be Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare. When I heard that there would be copies available I was all bouncy and giddy. When I thought my shuttle bus was going to be late in dropping me off at the Javits Center and that I might miss the drop....well lets just say that I provided entertainment for my roommate and friends on Twitter. But I will be honest and say that I was not among those that RAN from the entry doors to the Simon & Schuster booth....a fast walk, yes, that was me....but not a run. So there is that bit of self restraint that I had. Albeit a small one. Clockwork Angel was also the first of my BEA books that I read as I started it that very night because even though it was May and the book wouldn't be out until August I just couldn't wait. And this is when getting an Advanced Reading Copy (ARC) or a book can be a bad thing as book 2 in this series isn't scheduled for release until September 2011 - and who knows if I'll be able to get an ARC of that - or if their will even be ARCs.

But anywho, I digress.

Cassandra Clare was first brought to my attention by my Book Bully Tiffany who loved her Mortal Instruments series and made me read them. I resisted (foolishly) until after I attended an invent in Bryant Park in which Cassie talked about the Mortal Instruments books as well as gave some teasers for Clockwork Angel. It wasn't long before I was hooked on this world and the mythology that surrounded it. It was just so well done. One disappointment that I had with Clockwork Angel was that I only had one copy - so my book bully and I couldn't read simultaneously. So I did the only thing I could think of to do - while reading the book I wrote some of my thoughts on post it notes and left them scattered throughout the book for her to read. (Yes, I really am that much of a nerd.)

There were so many great themes that were discussed in Clockwork Angel. I loved how there was a little more detail added to why the race of the Shadowhunters was thinning out and the idea that some chose to leave the life. In the Mortal Instruments series it seems as though everyone born in a Shadowhunter family wants to be one and I enjoyed how Clare explored how that wasn't always the case. I also really Clare's use of gender roles and the social mores of Victorian England in order to shape each of the main female characters. The Victorian Era wasn't known for its gender neutrality and while women in the Shadowhunter world have more freedoms than your typical girl they do are under many constraints.

Like Charlotte, who is in charge of the London Institute in all but name. Her character was raised to run that facility but when her father died the Council looked to another man to head it up. Despite the fact that Charlotte was the best option. Rather than see her beloved facility fall into someone else's hands Charlotte married and convinced the Council to nominate her new bumbling inventor husband as the head. (Can I just say how much I ADORED Henry? He was just so genuine and clueless and sweet - so very adorkable!) Charlotte then became trapped in this though because while everyone who lives in the institute knows the truth she still has to hide her management because the Council didn't believe a woman was capable. Can you imagine how hard it would be to have to try and suppress your intelligence and skills because if you were more vocal you might lose everything? I certainly can't. And don't think that Charlotte took advantage or duped Henry - he really is better suited for the lab tinkering away....making the prototypes of devices that will evolve into ones that Jace and company would use in more modern times. I also loved how Charlotte and Henry interacted they were so sweet together much of the time.

Then there is Jessamyn, who isn't living at the institute by choice and who doesn't want to be her. She is another strong female character who knows her mind and desires and yet because of cultural restraints she isn't allowed to just go off and do as she pleases. As an unmarried young woman she is expected to have a guardian at all times and in her world she's expected to become a Shadowhunter. Only she doesn't want that life. Jessa wants to escape only she can't do so in Victorian England unless she's married. The dating scene of Victorian England was far different than today and so she's having a hard time finding a non-shadowhunter who will take her away into the life she thinks she wants. One where she only has to worry about clothes and running a house and other things that mundanes do. I am not so sure she'd be happy living in the mundane world though because she is strong and intelligent and loves to speak her mind. She is also pretty handy with a parasol and would make Alexia Tarabotti very proud.

Tessa too struggles with her place in the world. She was raised in the mundane world and accepts the rules and protocols of existing in those times. The poor girl is truly out of her element when she encounters the Shadowhunters and she's genuinely horrified when she learns that Charlotte doesn't wear a corset! Throughout the book Tessa struggles as she straddles to very different and yet similar worlds. She struggles with trying to fit into the rules of each as she is torn between two swoon worthy boys (Shout out to Team Jem!!). She also struggles with the idea that this unknown person called the Magister wants to marry her - which is a topic that my book bully and I debated the reason behind. In the end we wondered if he wanted to marry Tessa so that she would be bound to him legally in the eyes of Victorian Law. Yes he could just kidnap her and do whatever it is he wants with her power but if she ever escapes then the law would be against him. And Tessa, raised as a mundane would head to the mundane law officers (at least she would before she learned of the Shadowhunters). But if she was legally married then her options would be a lot more limited.

I could go on forever I think just debating and thinking and going over all the ins and outs of this book. The whole story is just so rich and vivid. The characters all highly developed and so very flawed. Everyone is trying to overcome something.  Charlotte, Jessa and Tessa are all strong women trying to overcome issues of authority and what others think they are expected to do and how they should act. Will is dealing with a big mystery of the past that adds a haunted look to his eyes when he thinks no one is looking. Their is a melancholy air that follows him about and he tries to suppress it by being overly jovial and witty. Which only works some of the time. Its very hard to act carefree when you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. Jem is also dealing with demons of his own. He is such a sweet character. He is smart and observant and notices far more about the world around him then people suspect. I simply ADORE ADORE ADORE how Will and Jem interact throughout the book!!

Clockwork Angel is a book that you can re-read several times and always catching something new. Its a great start to a new series and aspect of the Shadowhunter world. My only real complaint is that epilogue! OMG I swear Cassie Clare is trying to KILL me with suspense!! I could have waited easily for Clockwork Prince (Sept 2011) if it weren't for how Clockwork Angel ended. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!! So hurry up 2011!!! I need some more of the Infernal Devices!!!

Great contest for books involving Social Media

Like books on Social Media? Enter YA Librarian Tales's contest for Top 8 and What's Your St@tus by Katie Finn. Regular readers will remember that I read Top 8 a few weeks back (my review). I thought it was a fun book and hope to get to its sequel soon!

The contest is open until 05 September and you can learn how to enter by visiting YA Librarian Tales Blog (click here).

Meet the Contemps!!

Celebrate realistic YA with The Contemps!

Hello internet!

Today I am pleased to let everyone know about a brand new website that is launching today called The Contemps. Who are The Contemps you ask? They are a group of 21 authors who write contemporary fiction - that's realistic fiction set in modern day with no sparkly emo vampires or firey werewolves or magic users found in their pages. While I haven't read all the books that these authors have written, the ones I have read have kept me up to the wee hours of the night because I've been unable to put them down.

What will you find on The Contemps website? They'll be doing feature posts every week on Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday, including*:

- Hot Topic Tuesdays, where they will discuss an important topic or issue relevant to teens and often portrayed in YA literature. Some topics will be fun, others will be heavy, but they will never be boring!
- Spotlight Wednesdays, where they will discuss a current contemp read.
- Teen Thursdays, where they share stories from their own (mostly embarrassing) high school years and invite readers to submit guest posts and questions for future Teen Thursday posts.

They'll also be chatting with other contemp YA authors, bloggers, librarians, and generally blabbing about how much they love YA. And check in for contests and giveaways as they get into the groove over the coming weeks!

*The write up taken from an email sent by Contemp member, Sarah Ockler.

Speaking of contests, The Contemps are starting off with a bang giving visitors the opportunity to win a copy of all 21 books that will be released over the coming year!! To enter all you have to do is participate in the Contemps Challenge by promising to read at least 18 of The Contemps' books over the course of the next year, which enters you for a chance to win all of those books. Winners will be announced in November, so you'll know in advance whether you can skip the bookstore or library on your 18 picks. :-)

To find more about how to sign up for the Challenge on the "Get Involved" page that goes live today and if you think you might sign up, you can post the Challenge participant graphic on your blog. I don't know about you but I think this sounds like a fun challenge so I'll definitely be participating! Heck, just looking at the authors who are part of The Contemps I know that I'd be reading most, if not all, of their books anyway - so really its a win-win. :-)

Take The Contemps Challenge!

Doesn't that sound like fun? I can't wait to see what The Contemps come up with as their site goes live.

First Line: The statue has got to go.

I wasn't really sure what to expect when I decided to sign up for the Losing Faith tour on Traveling ARC Tours. I had heard some discussion surrounding the book and so thought hey why not? The book begins shortly before Brie's sister Faith is found dead of apparent suicide. However, despite how things look Brie doesn't believe that her sister killed herself. Brie and Faith might not have been the closest of sisters but there are some things that you just know about someone else. And so as a way to deal with the grief of her sister's...or avoid dealing with the grief...or both...Brie decides to investigate the events leading up to it.

Losing Faith is the sort of book that is perfect for a lazy day of reading. Its great for sitting out on the balcony, curling up on the couch on a winter's night or relaxing on the beach. Its not a book that is filled with car chases or gunfights or overly intrinsic plots. Its a book that is filled with following words that you just fall into. The plot itself is a bit slow moving but I loved the beauty of the words and so I didn't mind that it took awhile for events to develop. I also didn't think that the cult in the synopsis was an actual cult - although it certainly has the earmarks of the beginning of a cult. Hey, even cults don't grow to David Koresch bigness overnight.

I really loved the character of Brie. She was a genuine girl who was dealing with the loss of a sister and only really got to know her after it was too late. As with many Young Adult books Brie's parents were almost non-existant but they were seen on the peripherals. But what you saw of them showed that they each dealt with the grief and horror of losing a child in very realistic ways. Which left Brie in a weird state of limbo. It also didn't help that those Brie thought of as friends weren't really friends and those that Brie didn't were the ones that provided a pillar of strength. Also, a special shout out to Alistair (aka Alis) who is a wonderfully sweet boy that I think many will swoon over.

There were some scenes that were cliched but over all there was a realism to the story that its hard not to enjoy the prose of the words. Losing Faith is a story about love, loss, and having faith in the world around you. Its a story that reminds you how easy it is to lose track of those that we should be closest to and so hopefully those that read Losing Faith take it to heart that people are only here for a brief moment and you should hold tight to your loved ones for as long as you can. I really enjoyed Losing Faith and its one that I will be recommending to others.

Book Trailer Monday (45): Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink

Book Trailer Monday is where once a week I feature a trailer for a book that has captured my attention. This trailer might be for a book that is about to be published, or maybe its for a book that has already been released. There won't be any rhyme or reason to the trailer that I choose....the only common denominator will be that I liked it. That it made me stop or made me think or maybe it made me laugh. I do this mainly for my own enjoyment because I love book trailers. I find them fascinating and I hope that you enjoy the ones that I show here each week as well.

This weeks trailer is for the Prophecy of the Sisters  by Michelle Zink which was published by Little Brown Books on 01 Aug 2009. The original trailer for the hardcover release was made by VLC Productions and images from that were used for the paperback trailer. Normally you don't usually see a whole new trailer made when a book moves from HB to PB but I think Little Brown might have done so to highlight the change in cover - which I am still iffy on though the girls are growing on me. I am just not a fan of the open mouths. Though I have to admit that the cover change only began to grow on me after seeing the PB trailer. I just really love how that is done.Of the two trailers I think I like the PB one better I just love the animation and the change in the images. How about you? What did you think of this weeks selection?  Which trailer do you prefer? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

The Tale of the Orange Cake

Since the end of May there has been much talk in my twitter stream about cake. Specifically orange cake. To clarify I don't mean orange colored or orange in the carrot flavor sense of the term but this kind of orange:

Anywho, as I've said there has been a lot of talk. Mostly coming from Erica of The Book Cellar and Khy of Frentic Reader. But it is a long running joke now and many others have joined in the fun. Others not in the loop have also started to ask me the story about the meaning of the Orange Cake and so here it is.

Once upon a time, not too long ago (May), I and many others attended the Book Expo America in that fabled city known as New York. There was much fun to be had during this time and many meet ups among bloggers. Including one that took place in a tea house. See us all gathered here:

At this tea there was desert that came in the form of little tiny cakes covered in different colors of fondant. The waitress, who bore a very uncanny resemblance to a pixie in both appearance and voice, plopped a purple covered cake in front of me and called it orange flavored.

The Pixie
I looked around and heard there was chocolate and asked the pixie in a very nice voice if I could please have chocolate.  The rest of the dialogue went something like this:

The Pixie smiled and said "Well have you tried the orange its quite nice."
Me: No thank you I would prefer chocolate.
The pixie smiled again and said "Oh but you must try the orange it is really good."
I smiled back, a bit tightly and said once again that I would really prefer chocolate as I am not a fan of orange.
Pixie: Oh but the orange is really good. I don't like orange things myself and I really do enjoy this cake. Go one now. Just try it.
Me (a bit more forcefully): I would really just have one of the chocolate cakes, if it wouldn't be too much trouble.
Pixie: Are you sure you don't want to try it? Just one bite? I'll get you a chocolate but you should try the orange.
Me: I'll pass.
Pixie: You really won't try it? C'mon on now...try it....just try it.

I swear the Pixie began to get an evil look in her eyes just like this

This went on for a bit before it finally sunk in that I wasn't going to try the orange cake....I tend to dig in my heels a bit and my stubborn streak comes out when someone tries to force me to do something. And I think she eventually sensed that the delightful orange cake was moments away from getting smashed in her face (I have a wee temper too) and she left to get a chocolate one.

The rest of the tea party gang thought this exchange was quite fun and it was only moments of the pixie departing in which the chants of "just try it, try the orange cake" started.....and haven't stopped since.

I still refuse to eat the orange cake.

Or I did....one night I forget the conversation but it was on twitter with Erica who was joking with me about the orange cake and for whatever reason I tossed out that I would eat the Orange cake when I hit 500 blog followers.

I thought this would pass. I should have known better. I also thought it would take eons to hit 500 followers. But when this exchange went down - just a few weeks ago - I was at around 250 followers and at the time of this posting I'm at 315. So 500 might come sooner than I thought it would.

So that is the story of the Orange Cake. If I ever make it to 500 blog followers I will make and eat orange cake. Stay tuned...

Orange Cake

Update: 500 followers have been reached. You can see the results of the cake baking here.

First Line: You saw me before I saw you.

I bought this book after listening to a fragment on Bookalio.us the short snippet that Pam read had me intrigued and so I immediately rushed out and picked up a copy for myself. I started to read it the day after it arrived on a trip my friend and I took to the beach - which just added to the ambiance of the read. Unfortunately I had to put it down soon after to read some review books but thoughts of this story stayed with me. When I was finally able to pick it up again I was kept up late reading. I was so engrossed....no that's not the right word....I was addicted to the story.

Stolen by Lucy Christopher is like no other book that I've read its a book that trumps everything that I've read so far this year. And as I've read some pretty amazing reads that is saying a lot. This book is unique in so many ways. First there are no real chapters to speak of....just short breaks here and there in the narrative. The narrative itself is also fairly unique in that it is a letter....a very long letter written by Gemma - who is the victim of Ty. Ty....words are so hard to describe him. He is the abductor, the villian, the tortured soul who thinks he is saving Gemma from the evils of the world. He is a person that you think you should hate and despise but find that you can't. Ty defies all that it means to be a villian because while he has done something bad he isn't a bad person. Then there is the setting - the outback of Australia - which because more then just a setting and turns into a character all on its own.

This is a novel that I had no expectations of before walking into it and now that I have finished it I don't have the words to say just how truly amazing it was. Gemma's voice is unique and real and touches the very soul inside you. As a reader you turn the pages wondering just where it will all end and what choice Gemma will make. You are torn between wanting her to escape and return to the life she lead before and wanting her to stay and make a life with Ty. These conflicting emotions become a struggle - both with the reader and with Gemma - and there are no easy answers. There is only this book that is filled with such prose and detail that you can almost touch the desert sands. (Of course it probably doesn't hurt that I read the bulk of this sitting on my balcony on a very hot summer day.) This is a book that I will become a champion for and Lucy Christopher is an author that I will be eagerly waiting to see what she comes up with next. Although I think that Stolen will be incredibly hard to surpass.

And seriously folks, if you only pick up one book this year, then it should be this one. Its just that good.
