Mina Hamilton is your typical American teen…she goes to high school, worries about if the boy she likes will ever like her back, the prom, homework, trying not to become a social outcast, and oh yeah, her parents are vampires and she has a few short weeks before she has to decide to become one herself. As a human Mina isn’t supposed to know that the vampire world exists but due to an unfortunate twist of events she’s been discovered and is now being forced to make a choice before she’s ready. To help her decide she must attend a bi-weekly Vampire orientation class that will tell her all the basics of what its like to make the change. Along the way she must figure out prom, deal with liking not one but two cute boys, keeping her vampire classes a secret from her very best friend and trying to come to grips with what she’s going to do.

I loved this Sucks to be Me by Kimberly Pauley. I thought that the character of Mina was very believable and I loved her wit as she dealt with being a teenager and as she thought through the decision she had to make. The story is told mostly through diary like entries and the start of each chapter has a little doodle as well as a vampire myth vs fact. Pauley writes a believable world and changes up the traditional vampire myths and puts her own twist on things. I had a lot of fun reading this book and it often made me laugh out loud. I was also sad when it came to an end. I really would have liked to stay in Mina’s world and hear more about the direction that her life takes after she made her choice. Because no matter how she would like to avoid making a decision right this moment there is no getting away from it. So she does make a choice and what she chooses just might surprise you. Or maybe not. There are pros and cons to each and I’m not sure what I would choose if I had to make the choice. How about you? If you had only a month or so to decide to become a vampire or not, would you? Leave me a comment and let me know.
