Anyone who talks to me long enough about books will eventually hear me mention The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. This is a wonderful urban fantasy series set in modern day Chicago that stars Harry Dresden, the only registered wizard in the yellow pages. In the books Harry battles various beasties in order to protect the innocent people of Chicago….as well as preseve his own hide (and not necessarily in that order). Recenly Jim Butcher published this prequel to the series and rather than do his standard text form he used the graphic novel format. Graphic novels have been growing in popularity over the last few years so it seemed only natural that Butcher would jump on the bandwagon so to speak.

Welcome to the Jungle contains 4 issues that deal with a mystery at the local zoo. Since the story is so short I won’t say too much about it because I don’t want to risk giving anything away. Needless to say Harry is up to his usual tricks in trying to figure out what happened. The only difference is that you actually get to “see” the action as it unfolds. I found that Dresden’s story worked very well in the graphic format. The drawings were full color and well done (although some of the regulars didn’t look quite how i’ve been picturing them but that’s no surprise.) Some of the reviews I read on Amazon complained that this book was told in this form…and those reviews baffle me. I think that this was a wonderful way to tell a Dresden story. And while I don’t want this to become the main format of the Dresdenverse…I wouldn’t mind seeing other graphic stories featuring Harry in the future. If you are a fan of the series then chances are you’ll like this book.
