Betrayed is the second novel in PC & Kristen Cast’s House of Night Series. I read the first book, Marked, earlier this year and while I did have some issues with it I was curious to see how the series would continue. This book picks up almost immediately after Marked leaves off. Zoe is now leader of the elite school group known as the Dark Daughters and she must figure out how to incorporate her vision of how she wants to be. But all is still not perfect in this vampire finishing school. Aphrodite, her arch nemesis, might not be as evil as she first thought…nor are those that she trusts be worthy of her admiration.

I enjoyed this book much more than the first novel. The characters were all fleshed out a bit more as was the story. While there was still a lot of parenthesis but it was toned down in comparison to the first book. The preachiness was still in effect (all teens who drink are alcoholics and scum….all teen girls who do anything sexual are sluts)…but that too wasn’t as overly done as in Marked. Zoe and her friends were also more natural and believable as teenagers (preachiness aside). The plot of this book was also a bit more engaging than in Marked and so I will probably check out the next book in the series at some point. Hopefully, the series will continue to improve with each succeeding book.
