First Line: Ever wonder what the lives of the chosen ones are really like?

A group of young impossibly rich teens run amuck in New York City. No doors are closed to them and nothing is taboo. Their lives are chronicled (read: gossiped) about by one of their own on a blog by a girl known only as Gossip Girl.
This book was short and I feel a little unclean after reading it. The lives that these teens live tend to be a little sordid and over the top. And yet I found it hard to pull away. I mainly picked up this book because I recently started to watch the tv show that started this fall. The show is the guilty pleasure of my tv watching and this book shares a similar spot. It was cheesy, over the top, and a little predictable. I don’t believe that any of the characters are real people – even though the author has said that the events are loosely based on her own prep school years. The book didn’t suck but it wasn’t an award winner either. I’ll probably check out the next two in the series – since they are also short and I’ve already mooched them – but am not sure if I will continue with it after that. As of right now, I think that I like the tv show of it better.
Now I feel really dirty….after all isn’t the book supposed to be WAY better then the media output (movie, tv show, broadway musical, etc) that its based on?

I, too, felt unclean (and yet shamefully satisfied) after reading this book. If I had a child, I would NOT want her reading this series, because it’s quite raunchy, but as an adult, I won’t lie – reading this book was an entertaining way to spend an evening.
